Bachelor's Degree in Mass Media

Baldwin City Campus

The task of communicating to the masses is multi-faceted and constantly evolving. The role of a modern journalist relies on strong abilities in written, visual and oral communication. Technology also plays a key role in modern broadcast, print and online publications. With the prevalence and growth of the Internet, converged media are shifting into the mainstream, creating a necessity for broad technical and communicative knowledge and capabilities.

The major in Mass Media at Baker University has been designed to accommodate the needs of the modern journalist.

The Mass Media curriculum begins with introductions to all media prevalent in today’s world and the effect media have on society. As you progress in your studies, you will delve deeper into one or more media as you pursue a concentration in broadcast, a concentration in print or both. Computer and design courses provide you knowledge of the techniques and technical competencies necessary to work in the field of mass communication. Media courses will also focus on the applicable theory, ethical principles and legal issues pertaining to the media industry.

In a small, intimate campus environment, you will have ample opportunity to work for one or more campus media. With a campus newspaper, radio station, television station and an online companion that works to converge all media, students gain practical experience with guidance from faculty advisers. Students also are encouraged to pursue internships during Interterm and summer.

With practical experience and thorough competence, you will leave Baker with the confidence to communicate and to create.
