Music Scholarships

Baker offers scholarships to music majors and non-music majors for their participation in Baker University music ensembles and activities. The amounts of these music scholarships are based on musical ability and potential shown through audition.

Music Scholarship Auditions

Music Scholarship auditions are held nearly every school day in the Owens Musical Arts building on the Baldwin City campus.

You will perform for five to eight minutes. Following your performance, Department of Music faculty will interview you. At this time you will have the opportunity to ask questions about Baker University and the Department of Music.

A repertoire you have prepared as a soloist for regional or state music festivals is appropriate for your audition. You are strongly encouraged to select an audition piece or pieces that are accompanied, and you are welcome to bring your own accompanist. If that is not possible, an accompanist will be provided. A taped accompaniment is not appropriate.

Instrumentalists should prepare a solo, etude or movements from a work for your instrument. Memorization is not required.

Vocalists should prepare two contrasting songs. Memorization is recommended.

To arrange your audition, please contact the Music Office at 785.594.8478 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . It is recommended that you audition before the end of April preceding your first year of college.

Music scholarships are available in amounts from $1,000 to $3,500 or more.

Do I have to be a music major to qualify?
No, any incoming freshman or transfer student may qualify for a music scholarship. Approximately 75% of the students involved in the music ensembles are non-majors, and a large number of music scholarships are awarded to non-majors.

If I receive a music scholarship my freshman year, will I have it all four years?
Music scholarships are renewable. However, you will have to maintain an above-average grade-point and fulfill any other stipulations stated when the award was initially offered.

If I receive another University scholarship, am I still eligible for a music scholarship?
Probably! Numerous scholarships and awards are available, and each carries its own stipulations. This will be discussed in detail when you audition.

What do I have to do to apply for a music scholarship?
First of all, you must be admitted to Baker University and must apply for financial aid through the Financial Aid Office if you’ve not already done so.
