Engineering

Baker University, one of the region’s top liberal arts universities, offers a 3+2 pre-engineering program in several engineering fields. The program leads to a degree from Baker and a degree from either the University of Kansas (KU), in Lawrence Kan., or Washington University (Wash U), in Saint Louis, Mo. You will spend three years at Baker then transfer to KU or Wash U. After two more years of study, you will earn two degrees: a Bachelor of Science from Baker University and an engineering degree from KU or Wash U. For students with limited background in mathematics (an ACT score of less than 20 and grade of C or lower in your last non-AP math class) we offer a longer program.

3+2 Advantage

The 3+2 combination offers several advantages. First and foremost, you will receive individualized attention from our top-notch faculty in small classes of less than 24 students. Also, it is a great idea if you want to earn a liberal arts education, including participation in the arts, music and sports, while going to college. Another advantage is the additional degree in one of the fundamental sciences, which will make you highly marketable as an engineer. Many of our students are also attracted to the small classes for freshman and sophomores, a rarity at larger schools.

In addition, the program has the advantage of flexibility. Most engineering schools require you to choose a field of engineering in the first year of study. In our program you learn about the different fields without having to commit to one. If you ultimately choose not to go into engineering, you may complete a degree in physics, computer science, chemistry or math in four years.

If you are involved in extra-curricular activities at Baker and would like to complete four years here and then transfer to KU or Wash U, that is an option. In that case, you should still follow the suggested program, and we cannot guarantee that you will finish the engineering program in less than two years once you are done at Baker. Also, in some cases, accommodations have been made for strong students to continue their extra-curricular activities at Baker while attending nearby KU.
