Ira DeSpain possesses strong ties to Baker University. Not only has he served as the University Minister since 1992, he also is a 1970 alumnus. His parents and his two children attended, and he met his college sweetheart, and wife, at Baker. Barbara graduated in 1971.

Ira earned his Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Baker University in 1970, a Master of Divinity from Saint Paul School of Theology in 1973, and a Doctor of Ministry from the Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University in 2000.

Romans 12 is his favorite biblical passage, which states do not be conformed to this world, but continually be transformed by the renewing of your minds so that you may be able to determine what God's will is-what is proper, pleasing, and perfect (depending on Bible version).

Forming relationships with students and the feeling that what he does matters in the lives of many people in many ways is what Ira likes best about his role of University Minister. He wants students to know that they are welcome to call on him anytime they need a mentor or simply somebody to talk to for support.
