Earth We Are

Earth We Are works to promote environmental awareness on campus and is open to all Baker students. Members organize and host events each year that promote environmentally friendly practices on campus. Each semester, EWA members invite the campus community to take part in highway cleanups throughout the area. Members also organize the recycling program on the Baldwin City campus.

Recycling Program

Sponsored by Earth We are, Baker University's recycling program began in 1989. During the 2007 calendar year, the program recycled 27.5 tons of paper, cardboard, glass, aluminum, plastics, tin and steel. However, in 2008 that mushroomed to 133.7 tons. This increase was partly due to increased interest and efforts on campus, but a lot of the increase came from people living off-campus bringing materials to Baker's recycle bins. This has spurred the city of Baldwin City to build a citywide recycling center, scheduled to open in spring 2010.

This year the program will also accept alkaline batteries and electronic waste. Because more and more ground-water pollutants come from the electronics we throw away, EWA will sponsor an e-waste day in Baldwin City next spring.

A recent Harris Poll showed that fewer people between the ages of 18 and 30 recycled than those of any other age bracket. Earth We Are members work to teach their fellow students the importance of recycling and leading an environmentally friendly life.

More than 80 percent of what the average person throws in the trash can be easily recycled. That's particularly true of college students, who throw away mostly paper products, followed by plastic and aluminum. In the recent survey, most said they did not recycle because they were too busy, it cost too much or it just wasn’t convenient. On Baker's Baldwin City campus, recycling is convenient and free.

Where to Recycle on Baker Campus

The main site is in the alley parking lot behind Pulliam Hall. At this site are three large yellow containers for paper, including newspaper, junk mail, copy paper, phone books, paperback books, shredded paper (leave in bag), brown paper bags and chipboard (i.e., cereal boxes and pop boxes). Please do not put plastic or cardboard in these bins.

We also have barrels for mixed colored glass and a large orange bin for cardboard, plastic, tin and scrap metal. Any metal can be recycled. All boxes must be flattened and placed in the bin. We take all plastics numbered 1 through 7, including Styrofoam. Bundle all plastics together, and toss it into the bin. To prevent trash from blowing around the neighborhood, don't leave anything on the ground.
