Guy Fawkes was arrested shortly after midnight on November 5, 1605 as he emerged from a cellar under the House of Lords where he was preparing to ignite barrels and barrels of gunpowder to blow the building up as James I opened the new session of Parliament. Fawkes was one of 9 conspirators who designed to blow up the protestant king and replace him with his catholic daughter. Although he was not the leader of the conspiracy, he was the one caught. He was utterly unrepentant, insisting that he was sorry not to have succeeded, and refusing under torture to name his co-conspirators. This earned him the admiration of his intended victim.
Until 1859, the Book of Common Prayer included a prayer which is currently featured in the Quayle Bible Collection titled “Prayer to be used yearly upon the Fifth Day of November for the happy Deliverance of the King, and the Three Estates of the Realm, from the most Traiterous and Bloudy intended Massacre by Gun-Powder.” Now the Brits mark the day with bonfires and fireworks.
On Guy Fawkes Day, November 5, the Book of Common Prayer in the Quayle will be opened to the prayer.
