In addition to the professional education requirements, students pursuing licensure in the field of music (preK-12) must complete the following courses with a grade of C or better. The music education curriculum is divided into courses to enhance understanding of music theory, music history and music pedagogy and performance courses to provide a solid foundation in music performance.

Depending on your primary focus, you will take applied lessons in two secondary areas, totaling 2 credit hours in each:
- MU 217 Applied Secondary Voice (instrumental or piano major)
- MU 21X Applied Secondary Inst. (instrumental, piano, or voice major)
- MU 215 Applied Secondary Piano (voice major)
In addition, you will take part in a large ensemble pertaining to your area of interest:
- MU 2XX Primary Large Ensemble (4 hours total)
- MU 4XX Primary Large Ensemble (3+ hours total)
- MU 2XX Secondary Large Ensemble - Secondary (4 hours total)
