Program for Instrumental Music Education

In addition to the professional education requirements, students pursuing licensure in the field of instrumental music (preK-12) must complete the following courses with a grade of C or better. The music education curriculum is divided into courses to enhance understanding of music theory, music history and music pedagogy and performance courses to provide a solid foundation in music performance.

Musicianship

  • MU 151 Music Theory Fundamentals, 2 hours
  • MU 153 Sight-singing, Dictation, and Aural Skill, 1 hour
  • MU 157 Class Piano, 1 hour
  • MU 164 18th Century Functional Harmony, 3 hours
  • MU 158 Class Piano, 1 hour
  • MU 263 Chromatic Harmony, 3 hours
  • MU 257 Class Piano, 1 hour

In addition, you will earn credit in two of these three courses depending on the major performance area:

  • MU 217 Applied Secondary Voice (instrumental or piano major) 2 hours total
  • MU 21X Applied Secondary Instrument (instrumental, piano or voice major) 2 hours total
  • MU 215 Applied Secondary Piano (voice major) 2 hours total

Additional courses:

  • MU 2XX Primary Large Ensemble (4 hours total)
  • MU 4XX Primary Large Ensemble (3+ hours total)
  • MU 2XX Secondary Large Ensemble - Secondary (4hours total)
