What is mathematics?

About

A man buys a horse for $60. He sells the horse for $70. He then buys the horse back for $80. He sells the horse again for $90. In the end, how much money did the man make or lose? Or did he break even? Can you solve this viral word problem that has stumped the Internet? If so, then being a math major might be for you.

Mathematics is an essential science that helps you draw conclusions about the world. Math is the study of quality, structure, space, and change in simple terms.

Mathematicians expand this knowledge by developing new principles and understanding relationships between existing principles to solve real-world problems. It’s more than a numbers game because math builds comprehension and logic skills that play a crucial role in daily life.

What can you do with a math degree? The sky is the limit. You can pick your path from an aerospace engineer to a math teacher.

Why study mathematics at Baker University?

Baker University offers you the best of both worlds. As a math major, you will experience one-on-one attention, small class sizes, and the opportunity to participate in research studies at larger universities during the summer. Baker University prepares you for graduate school or success in just about any field you choose after graduation.

Do you want to teach math?

Baker University’s undergraduate education programs license teachers in mathematics (6-12) and Middle-Level Mathematics (5-8). Students pursuing a degree in education and teacher licensure work closely with faculty advisors from the School of Education to fulfill the requirements for a degree from Baker University and teacher licensure in Kansas. Candidates are required to complete education course work and the required course work in at least one content area.

Teacher Licensure

Noyce Scholarship & ASTRA Program

The Noyce Scholarship and ASTRA Program trains excellent STEM teachers. Through the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Grant from the National Science Foundation, Noyce scholars will be awarded a scholarship of $11,000 during their junior and senior years as they tackle a demanding course load that culminates in a double major in education and either biology, chemistry, or mathematics.
