Baker offers scholarships to music majors and nonmusic majors for their participation in Baker University music ensembles and activities. The amounts of these music scholarships are based on musical ability and potential shown through audition.
Music Scholarship Audition Days | Held Each Spring
Financial awards are available to academically gifted and musically talented students. The scholarship is a renewable and worth up to $3,500.
To be considered for a music scholarship follow these steps:
- Apply and be accepted to Baker University | online application
- Fill out the music scholarship application.
- Email the following link and your area of interest to your high school music teacher or a private instructor: www.bakerU.edu/musicrecommendation. You can also ask your teacher to fill out a hard copy of the teacher recommendation form and send it to us.
- Schedule your audition during one of our scholarship audition days. To schedule your audition, call the Music Office at 785.594.8478 or email
- After the last audition day, you may still apply for a scholarship and schedule an audition for any weekday. We recommend that you audition for a music participation award before the end of April preceding your first year of college.
You will perform for five to eight minutes. Following your performance, music program faculty will interview you. At this time you will have the opportunity to ask questions about Baker University and the Department of Music and Theatre.
Any repertoire that you have prepared as a soloist for regional or state music festivals is appropriate for your audition. You are strongly encouraged to select an audition piece or pieces that are accompanied, and you are welcome to bring your own accompanist. If that is not possible, an accompanist will be provided. A taped accompaniment is not appropriate.
Instrumentalists should prepare a solo, etude or movements from a work for your instrument. Memorization is not required.
Vocalists should prepare two contrasting songs. Memorization is recommended.

What kind of financial aid is available?
The Department of Music and Theatre offers music scholarships.
How much are the awards?
Music participation scholarships range from $1,000 to $3,500. In rare cases participation scholarships may be more than that.
Do I have to be a music major to qualify?
No, any incoming freshman or transfer student may qualify for a music scholarship. Approximately 75% of the students involved in the music ensembles are nonmajors, and a large number of music scholarships are awarded to nonmajors.
If I receive a music scholarship my freshman year, will I have it all four years?
Music scholarships are renewable. However, you will have to maintain an above-average grade-point and fulfill any other stipulations stated when the award was initially offered.
If I receive another University scholarship, am I still eligible for a music scholarship?
Probably! Numerous scholarships and awards are available, and each carries its own stipulations. This will be discussed in detail when you audition.
What do I have to do to apply for a music scholarship?
First of all, you must be admitted to Baker University and must apply for financial aid through the Financial Aid Office if you’ve not already done so. The Department of Music and Theatre recommends to Financial Aid a music scholarship award amount, and after reviewing your financial needs, the Financial Aid Office determines the actual amount of music scholarship you may receive.

Yes. You must complete three steps before music faculty will recommend you for an award.
- Complete a music program scholarship application.
- Submit a completed teacher recommendation form.
- Audition in front of the music faculty. It is recommended that you audition before the end of April preceding your first year of college.

How does the audition process work?
When you audition, you will be expected to perform for five to eight minutes and then have a brief interview with the music faculty. The music scholarship amount that is recommended will be based on your musicianship and potential shown throughout the audition and your teacher’s recommendation form. You should dress neatly. Slacks, dress or skirt are appropriate. T-shirts and jeans are not.
