Baker University 1A-5A Marching Festival

Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012 | Liston Stadium

Baker University and the Baker University Bands will host the 14th annual Baker University 1A-5A Marching Festival on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at Liston Stadium on the Baker University campus.

Bands, color guards and drum lines may participate for ratings or for comments only in this KSHSAA- and MSHSAA-approved event. Audio comments of each judge, a performance DVD and an award plaque will be presented to each band, drum line and color guard entrant. A Grand Champion trophy will be awarded the highest-scoring band of the festival.

The festival will run on a 15-minute schedule. Bands, color guard units and drum lines will be accepted and scheduled based on earliest postmark and paid entry fees until all time slots are filled.

Judging Panel

John Kieffer

John Kieffer received his B.S. Ed & M.A. (Music) degrees from the University of Missouri. He then taught in Omaha, Neb., for 16 years, the final seven years as director of bands at Omaha Benson High School. He also served as oboist/English hornist with the Omaha Symphony. In 1981, he became director of bands at the newly opened Olathe South High School. In 1982, he was elected president of the East Kansas Band Directors’ Association and in 1983, was named coordinator of music for Olathe Schools. During his 22-year tenure at Olathe South, his bands received a of 251 first-place awards or Division 1 ratings. In 1985, the Olathe South Band was invited to perform on opening day for the Kansas City Royals and then invited back to perform for the seventh game of the 1985 World Series. The Olathe South Band also performed at halftime for the Kansas City Chiefs. In 1993, Mr. Kieffer was named by Bands of America as Band Director of the Year. Since his retirement in 2003, Mr. Kieffer has remained active as both a clinician and adjudicator throughout the Midwest 

Brad Shores

Brad Shores is in his 12th year as director of bands at Haven High School. He is responsible for teaching the elementary and middle school bands as well as pep band, jazz ensemble, marching and concert bands and steel drum classes at the high school. Before his current position, he taught at Nickerson High School from 1989 to 2000 and, previous to that, in Phoenix, Ariz. As a composer, Brad has written for all types of percussion ensembles and steel drum groups and is a well-known clinician and adjudicator throughout the Kansas. He and his wife, Linda, also a music educator, have three children and frequently perform as the steel drum band Tropical Shores.

Eric Stambaugh

Eric Stambauh, director of Buhler High School Bands, is in his 13th year of teaching and ninth year directing Buhler Bands. His teaching duties include Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Pep Bands, Jazz Band, and 5th- and 6th-grade bands at Obee and Prosperity elementary schools. Under his direction, Buhler Bands have received numerous awards and state recognition. In 2006 and 2009 the Buhler Wind Ensemble was chosen to perform at the State KMEA Convention. In the marching forum, the Buhler Marching Band has won numerous 4A class titles; drumline/colorguard, and Grand Champion Awards at KU Heart of America, Neewollah, and Valley Center Marching competitions. Mr. Stambaugh is a graduate of Kansas State University, where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Music education and wind conducting. He began his teaching career at Liberal High School, where he was the director of bands for three years. Before his arrival at Liberal he was an assistant band director for the Salina Public Schools, teaching 5th- through 12th-grade instrumental. His professional memberships include Kansas Bandmasters Association, Kansas Music Educators Association, and MENC, and he was vice president of the Kansas State University Alumni Marching Band. He lives in Hutchinson with his wife, Amanda, and his 8-year-old son, Ethan, and his 6-year-old daughter, Haven.

Jerry Stone 

Recently retired as director of bands at Maize High School, Jerry Stone served as a band director in Kansas schools for 38 years. Throughout his career Jerry’s bands consistently received superior ratings in both marching and concert performance. Over the years Jerry served music education in the Kansas in many capacities, most notably as president of the Kansas Music Educators District 6, Kansas State Jazz chairman, and president of Phi Beta Mu. In 2000, the Kansas Bandmasters Association awarded Jerry the Kansas Outstanding Band Director Award. He is also a past recipient of the Kansas Outstanding Teacher Award from Kansas State News Network. Jerry is a much sought-after band adjudicator and clinician throughout Kansas and Oklahoma.
