Health & Physical Education
Health and physical education teachers encourage and model a healthy, active lifestyle for their students and teach them how to make positive choices that support lifelong wellness. Teachers must also place students in situations where they are able to learn how to work with others, understand that it is essential to put all their effort into a task, and to appreciate the importance of not giving up.
Baker's health and physical education teacher licensure major includes strong general education preparation along with educational methodology and content in health and physical education. In addition to the health and physical education content and methods courses, students also take several courses taught within the School of Education. Students will spend many hours observing and assisting public school teachers at all grade levels, culminating with a full semester of student teaching during their last semester at Baker.
Upon graduating and successfully completing the steps for teacher licensure, students are certified to teach preK-12 physical education and health. Many of Baker's teaching candidates also choose to coach a sport or serve as a sponsor of a school activity.
