Liar, Li ar masquerades as a film with a story instead of just a vehicle to allow Carrey and his facial antics free range. But the film has all the Carey trademarks. It has Jim Carey smiling, laughing, looking sexy, looking debonair, doing impersonations, doing slapstick, and well, you get the point - there's more Jim Carey than an ordinary mortal can endure.
Further, the film actually dabbles in a little moralizing which is especially annoying. But worst of all, is the blatant misogyny in the film. There's only one thing worse than a lawyer in Liar, Liar and that is a woman lawyer. The story is based on so many stereotypes, however, that any attempt to take them apart becomes more foolish than the film itself.
Swoozie Kurtz calls Carrey an over actor in one of the outcues included with the credits. The epithet takes the wind out of Carrey's overinflated sails and pulls the greatest laugh of the whole movie. It also epitomizes the whole film. There's too much Carrey and too little substance here.
If you're tempted to go see Liar, Liar just out of curiosity or a need to punish yourself, save your money and support public radio instead.
