Did you ever hear that little poem

"Spring is Sprung, the grass is riz, I wonder where them birdies is?

They say the bird is on the wing, ain't that absurd, I thought the wing was on the bird"

What is it about spring that seems to indicate that we all become brain dead. College Undergraduates become more disinterested in their studies once the weather warms up and otherwise intelligent people burst from their cocoons to do illogical acts under the rubric of a "Spring Fling."

Whatever the reason, there seems to be a strong tie between warm weather and a lack of brains. Maybe that's the problem with the film industry right now. With this seemingly uneding wave of trashy movies. Its a long haul til Winter and oscar fever entices movies with intelligence back to the screens. Until then, we have to suffer through such nonesence as Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion.

Lets start with the positive aspects of this movie. Mia Sorvino is wonderful. This actress is a true gem. Even when she's dishing up the most ridiculous collection of verbal waste imaginable, she shines through with real pizzaz. Sorvino almost makes the movie worthwhile, supported by Janeane Garafalo's typical portrayal of the ugly duckling.

Its a little more difficult to analyze Lisa Kudrow's talents. She basically does what she does every week on "Friends." It works for her on must see TV, and lots of her buddies have taken their Friend persona to the big screen, so why not Kudrow?

"Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion" is no worse than many other reunion angst films that have appeared over the years. Indeed, it is somewhat refreshing to see a buddy film with two women as protagonists, even if they are portrayed as dreadful twits. At least they survive their road trip.

Its also refreshing to see another film where the underdogs admit that their lives really aren't so bad, even though they are not part of the A group. Unfortunately, though, even though Romy and Michelle seem to try to etch out some new territory with this film, by accepting that their lives of mediocrity are okay, in the end, they are unfortunately rescued by the dashing prince.

In short, all the roles are blatantly stereotyped, from the kewpie dolls who grow up to be pregnant kewpie dolls, to the high school dweeb who grows up to be a dashing millionaire. And of course, the great football hero who ende up as a drunken slob.

Other moments in this film that are really quite annoying. Romy and Michelle, like most of us, I guess, decide that they must lose 10 pounds to go to the reunion. Consequently they don some wonderfully wacky gym outfits and mount bicycles. But if Sorvino and Kudrow have an ounce of excess flesh between them it certainly isn't visible. What is readily apparent, is that the scene is little more than an opportunity to oggle two pair of traditional female attributes.

Finally, there is one absolutely valuable message that comes from Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion. When the interminable hoops of education seem never ending, in the end its all worth while. Even the ultimate agony of writing a dissertation is better than watching this film.
