CHEMISTRY 120. BASIC CHEMISTRY BAKER UNIVERSITY Spring 2013 Section A: MWF 10:30 AM Section B: MWF 11:30 AM Instructor: M. Barbush Office: Mulvane 301 Phone: 594-8310 e-mail: michael.barbush@bakeru.edu Web Address: http://www.bakeru.edu/faculty/barbush/ Office Hours: MW 2:30-4:00 PM; T 1:30-3:30 PM Many other times by appointment TEXT: Stoker, H. Stephen, Introduction to Chemical Principles, Ninth Edition, Prentice-Hall, Inc.: Upper Saddle River, NJ; 2008. A calculator will likely be needed and may be used during tests. One that can use scientific notation is best; one that also can calculate logarithms is even better. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is an examination of the structure and nature of atoms; chemical reactions and stoichiometry; gases; water and solutions; acids, bases, and salts; oxidation and reduction; and nuclear chemistry. REQUIREMENTS: Class attendance is required. There will be NO make-up tests or quizzes. If you know in advance that you must miss a test, notify the instructor as soon as possible to arrange to take the test in advance. GRADING: The course grade will be determined primarily by four one-hour tests (400 points), one twenty-five minute quiz (50 points), and a comprehensive final examination (200 points). HINTS: It is often very helpful to work as many of the problems in the text as possible to gain a thorough understanding of the subject. It is often best (and more enjoyable) to work and discuss the problems with other people. CH120. TENTATIVE LECTURE AND EXAM SCHEDULE.
