"Girls Just Wanna Have Fun"
Helps Raise $37,000 for Baker Athletics!

On Friday, May 16 Baker University hosted its 5th Annual Wildcat Classic Golf Tournament that benefited the Baker Athletics department.

The tournament featured a total of 222 golfers and was played at the prestigious Alvamar Golf Course in Lawrence, Kan. Golfers were able to play nine holes on the private side and nine on the public side.

With the help of tournament organizers Director of Alumni and Corporate Relations, Doug Barth and Assistant Director of Athletics – Operations, Andrew Patch, the tournament raised over $37,000, all benefiting Baker student-athletes.

The tournament also featured a silent and live auction with 70 items including gifts such as a Tony Gonzalez autographed jersey, Jamaal Charles autographed jersey, KC Royals, KC Chiefs and KU basketball ticket packages and golf foursomes to some of the top golf courses in the KC metro area.

"The funds raised through this event will make a significant impact on all of our athletic programs and help us continue to compete at a championship caliber," said Director of Athletics Theresa Yetmar. "Thank you to everyone who had a hand in making this event such a success. It was truly a team effort."

This year's Wildcat Classic also added two new elements to the event. With the help of Troy Brin Alumni Manager for the Wounded Warrior Project, Baker was able to make a $1,000 donation to the Wounded Warrior Project, that donation was matched by two golfers Chris Costello and Baker alum Tony Rider for a total of a $3,000 donation. The Wounded Warrior project also had six warriors golf in the Classic.

"Civic engagement and servant leadership are values that we instill in our student-athletes and athletics staff," said Patch. "We felt the golf tournament would be a perfect opportunity to help other people in need and not just focus on ourselves. Doug and I have always admired the mission of the Wounded Warrior Project so it felt like a great idea to include this non-profit into the golf tournament."

The other new element of this year's tournament was the inaugural Girls Just Wanna Have Fun event.

Nearly 30 women attended the event that was also held at the Alvamar Golf Course clubhouse while the golfers were out on the course. The event consisted of a social hour with wine and cocktail tasting, as well as a massage, shopping with local vendors and a guest speaker, Baker alumna Jennifer Johnson '94. Jennifer spoke to the group about her book, Nordie's at Noon: The Personal Stories of Four Women "Too Young" For Breast Cancer.

"It has been fantastic putting together these new endeavors," said Patch. "We can definitely say that we grew our audience, raised more money for student-athletes, and helped donate funds that will empower members of our armed forces. In just one day Baker Athletics touched a lot of lives, and that's a pretty cool thing."

The Baker Athletics department would like to send a special thanks to Andrew Patch and Doug Barth for all of their hard work in organizing this years Wildcat Classic and would also like to thank Alex Affalter of Midwest Miller Coors for the beverage donation, also to all of our Girls Just Wanna Have Fun vendors and all of our volunteers that helped make the tournament run smoothly.

"This year's tournament was our best yet," said Barth. "The weather (minus the frost delay in the morning) was about as perfect as we could have ordered it. Our alumni and friends truly enjoyed playing at Alvamar and we received nothing but positive reviews.

"The success of this tournament relies heavily on our golfers and our sponsors. Sponsorships are critical in making this fundraising event a successful one. I also appreciate our new partnership with the Wounded Warrior Project and we were thrilled to donate $1,000 of our proceeds to this worthy organization. I can't wait for next year's tournament."
