Baker University Director of Athletics Theresa Yetmar announced the hiring of Baker alumnus Ryan Pitts as the new head coach of the Wildcats’ track and field program in June.

Pitts graduated from Baker in 2006 after a successful career on the football field and on the track for the ‘Cats. He was named an NAIA All-American wide receiver in 2005 and was a national indoor and outdoor qualifier in the high hurdles in 2006.

He spent the last year serving the Baker football coaching staff as the wide receivers coach and the track & field coaching staff as an assistant coach focusing on the sprints, jumps and hurdle athletes.

Coach Pitts was a key contributor to the Wildcats’ four Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships this year, as they captured the men’s and women’s indoor track & field championship and the men’s and women’s outdoor track & field championships.

Baker also qualified 15 athletes to the 2015 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in Gulf Shores, Alabama in May.

Before his coaching career at Baker, Pitts served as the head girls track and field coach at Warren High School in Downey, California, from 2010 to 2012 and was the assistant track and field coach at North Torrance High School in Torrance, California, from 2007 to 2010.

Pitts will now primarily take over as the head track and field coach at Baker but will work alongside Tim Byers, the newly hired director of cross country and track and field.

Cody Garcia, the head coach at Bethany College since 2014, is the new head coach of the Baker University wrestling program, Baker University Director of Athletics Theresa Yetmar announced in June.

Coach Garcia will be the third head coach in program history succeeding Jimmy May and Pete Di Pol.

Garcia served as an assistant wrestling coach for the Swedes for three years before taking over as head coach during the 2014 season.

In 2014, the Swedes finished 20th at the NAIA National Championships, where Colby Crank was the 149-pound national runner-up. Seven total individuals qualified for the national championships, the highest number in program history.

This past season, Garcia led Bethany to a second place finish in the Kansas Cup competition inside Baker’s Collins Center and he helped lead 149-pound wrestler Victor Hughes to an All-America honor, the second in program history.

Garcia came to Bethany from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he served as a student assistant wrestling coach. While at UNO, Garcia coached the 2011 squad to a NCAA Division II National Championship.

Prior to coaching, Garcia was a member of the UNO wrestling team, winning individual national championships in 2006 and 2008, runner-up in 2010, and finishing third in 2009. His team won National Championships in 2005, 2006, 2009, and 2010.

He was a four-time All-American and Academic All-American, graduating in 2010 with a 147-18 record, the fourth-highest number of all-time career wins at UNO since 1966. His 48 wins as a senior ranked as the second-highest number in school history, and Garcia set new UNO records of 84 career pins and 31 single-season pins.

Garcia was a three-time high school state champion and four-time state place finisher at Hutchinson High School, where he wrestled for his father, Mike.

Garcia will join the Baker family with his wife Kym and three children, Milayna, Elyza and Adryn.
