Quincy Seymour
Participated and lettered in football, basketball and track while at Baker University. In football, he lettered as both a junior and senior.
During his junior year, Baker won the conference championship.
As a senior he was voted to the all-conference team both on offense and defense.
In basketball, he lettered three years and was a starter on the 1941-1942 squad which took first place in the conference.
In track, he captured three more letters for throwing the javelin.
He was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and was elected Baker’s homecoming king in 1940. He majored in business administration.
Following graduation, he served with the Air Force as a second lieutenant during World War II. Returning to Ottawa, he began a 31-year career as an agent for State Farm Insurance, and was a member of the Millionaires Club on several occasions.
For many years was a coach and adviser to area American Legion baseball teams.
Refereed football and basketball throughout Kansas high schools and small colleges for over 25 years.
Was a member of the American Legion, the First United Methodist Church of Ottawa, and the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce.
Dr. Gorby R. Martin
Participated as an integral part of both the football and track teams. Played tackle from 1939-1942. Was selected member of the All-Conference Team 1941 and 1942. Along with Brother Burley, was known as part of the “Martin Bombers.”
Lettered in track from 1940-1943, participated in the discus, shot put and javelin. Won conference championship in same events in 1940, 1941, 1942.
Entered the U.S. Navy, serving as an Officer in the Pacific during a portion of World War II.
Returned to Kansas to coach high school sports at Overbrook, Kan., from 1946-1947.
Served as assistant coach of football, basketball and track under Coach Liston at Baker from 1947 to 1950. In 1950 returned to coaching at the high school level, coaching at St. Mary’s, Holton and Shawnee Mission North.
In 1960, left coaching to enter UMKC Dental School. After achieving the D.D.S. degree, practiced dentistry in Shawnee until August, 1986.
Married to Eunice Philgreen, Baker Class of 1950. They have five children, all Baker graduates.
Honored in 1977 as a part of the “Baker Family of the Year.”
Served the University as a four-term member of the Alumni Board of Directors and was a charter member of the Baker Wildcat Booster Club. Has served on various coach selection committees.
Maxwell E. Sloop
Lettered in football and track all four years.
Football: Was elected to the second team all-conference as a junior, and the first team as a senior as a tackle and extra point specialist.
Basketball: Spent three years as the team trainer/manager.
In 1952, was the student director of the Baker Relays.
Served as vice president of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Earned a degree in physical education, 1952.
Began officiating basketball in 1951. Was an assistant football coach in 1954 and assistant track coach in 1955 at Baker.
Was assistant coach at Topeka Highland High School 1955-61. From 1961-69 coached at Topeka Washburn Rural High School in wrestling, gymnastics, track and football, most as head coach.
Continues to be a registered football and gymnastics judge and has officiated at eight KSHSAA state meets.
Has served the KSHSAA on the Board of Directors, 1977-1982, and on the Executive Board, 1980-1982.
Charles Elmer Sloop
Lettered in football, basketball and track.
Football: Was named to several all-conference and all-Kansas teams. Was the "hard-driving, pass-snatching full back” on coach Emil Liston’s 1942 squad that went undefeated and untied.
Basketball: Was named all conference first team in both his junior and senior years.
Track: Won the Kansas Conference Championship in the high hurdles as a junior and low hurdles as a senior. Earned points additionally in the broad jump and high jump.
Served as vice president of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.
Earned a degree in physics. 1943 commissioned second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. Served in the Pacific during World War II and later in Europe. In 1953 joined the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, Topeka. Spent 33 years as an electrical engineer and manager.
Harry Edwin Davison
Lettered in football, basketball, baseball, and track. Earned 13 letters.
Football: Played center and linebacker. Was first team all-conference and elected to the all-state team as a senior. The 1937 Wildcats were conference champions.
Basketball: Lettered four years as a guard. Known for his aggressiveness, was elected to the honorable mention all-conference team as a senior.
Track: Lettered four years in the javelin.
Baseball: Lettered in baseball as a senior, the only year the university fielded a team while he was in college.
Member of the Zeta Chi fraternity.
Received a B.S. in Mathematics in 1938. Coached and taught for two years at both Wellsville High School and Harper High School.
Received an officer’s commission in the U.S. Navy and was sent for special courses in aerological engineering at MIT. Served with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II. Received a citation from Admiral Halsey for “Accurate Reporting of Wind, Weather, and Sea Swells Which Allowed U.S. Forces to Invade Iwo Jima Successfully Four Days Earlier Than Scheduled.” Also received the Air Medal from Secretary of the Navy, James Forrestal, for his meritorious achievements.
In 1946 began a 10-year career with the State of Kansas at the Veterans Administration.
From 1956-1959 was in the insurance business while serving as president of the Kansas College Officials Association. Left Kansas in 1959 to work in Colorado in the petroleum business, serving as Rocky Mountain division manager and vice president of Western Crude Oil. Appointed in 1979 to serve on the national committee on special problems of the veterans affairs and rehabilitation program of the American Legion.
Fredrick Lawrence Heine Jr.
Lettered in football, basketball and track.
Football: Was second team all-conference at tackle as a sophomore, and first-team selection as a junior. Served as team captain as a senior.
Basketball: Played as the center, winning all-conference honorable mention honors as a freshman, second team as a sophomore, and first team as a junior and senior. Also was elected the all-conference team captain as a junior and senior, while Baker’s team won the conference.
Track: Won conference championship in the shot put and also placed in the mile relay.
President of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity and a member of the German Club. Served as junior class treasurer, senior class president, president of the B Club, and student commission president.
Received A.B. degree in business administration and mathematics in 1937 and an M.A. degree in education administration from UMKC in 1943.
Taught accounting and mathematics in the Kansas City School District from 1942 to 1955 and served as vice principal and principal from 1956 to 1981.
Elected to the Kansas City, Missouri Board of Education in 1982 and re-elected in 1986. Served as president 1984-86.
Has served as president of the Kiwanis Club, and as a member of Intercity of Independence, Mo.
Received a special award from the Independence Neighborhood Councils in 1985 and a Baker University Alumni Citation in 1986.
Rankin Wellborn

Rankin lettered in basketball and track as a regular on the undefeated team of 1919. Known widely for his ability to shoot the foul shot. Honorable mention to the coaches All-Conference Team in 1919 and 1920. In 1920 he won the conference track meet in the half-mile. Member of Zeta Chi. M.A. Degree from Emporia State. Taught and coached, later serving as superintendent of schools, at Lyndon for 20 years. After resigning his post, he worked for many years with the Lyndon State Bank.

Robert lettered in football, basketball, and track. Captained the undefeated basketball team of 1919. Chosen All-Conference by conference coaches. Member of conference champion relay team also winning track points in the quarter mile and weight events. Conference champion in javelin.
Member of Zeta Chi. Commissioned lieutenant during World War I. Served with the S.A.T.C. at the University of Wisconsin. Taught school at Fredonia; later superintendent of schools at Moran. Went into the insurance business before moving to Wichita where he worked for the State of Kansas Department of Labor.

Fred lettered in basketball and track where he served as track team captain in 1918. Held Kansas Conference record in the half mile. Captain in 1918. Kansas conference record in the half mile. Member of Zeta Chi. Received M.A. from Kansas University in 1923, and his Ph.D. from Wisconsin in 1926. Professor of history at Iowa State Teachers College, 1926-1946; Professor of history at University of Maryland, 1946-1969, during which time he conducted classes at the Pentagon and other East Coast military bases. Author of two books. Listed in Who’s Who in the East.

John Wellborn, 1918
John lettered in basketball and track, won conference championship in 1915 and 1916 in the mile, while taking third in the two mile.
Member of Zeta Chi. During World War I was a member of the Machine Gun Company, 10th Div. Camp Funston. Received M.A. degree from Kansas University. Spent his career in education and as superintendent of schools first in Baldwin City, then Wamego.
