Since taking the helm of the Baker volleyball program in 1998, Kathy Allen has established herself as one of the most successful coaches in Baker volleyball history. As Allen enters her 16th season with the Wildcats, she has established a winning tradition year in and year out. The Cats are perpetual conference contenders, consistently finishing in the top four in the tough Heart of America Athletic Conference.

Coach Allen enters the 2013 season with a career record of 331-186. She currently ranks 25th on the NAIA Top 25 career wins chart and 14th on the NAIA Top 25 winning percentages list.

At Baker, Allen has coached five All-Americans and numerous players to region and conference honors. Her players also excel in the classroom: 23 players have been recognized as NAIA Scholar-Athletes, including Jasmyn Turner, Jana Boss and Tara Chumley in 2012. The team was recognized in 2010 by the AVCA and the NAIA with an overall GPA of 3.47.

In 2012, the Wildcats went 19-14 overall and 6-3 in the HAAC and finished fourth in the regular season conference standings. Allen helped lead three Wildcats to 2012 HAAC All-Conference First-Team honors including Boss, Savannah Smith and Danielle French and French was named the HAAC Freshman of the Year. Libero Renata Dill also earned a spot on the HAAC Second Team All-Conference and Turner was named to the HAAC Honorable Mention All-Conference team.

Allen had one of her finest years at Baker in 2011, leading the Wildacats to a HAAC regular season crown and an overall record of 26-11 and conference mark of 10-0.

Prior to joining the Baker coaching staff, Allen served as the interim head coach at Washburn University in Topeka and as a graduate assistant coach at Emporia State University. Allen coached high school volleyball at St. Mary's High School before entering the college ranks.

Allen has amassed many years of service in club volleyball, dating back to 1989 when she formed the Topeka Juniors Volleyball Club. Allen served as director and a member of the board for more than 10 years, helping guide the club to two national championships and recognition as one of the premier clubs in Kansas. Allen received USAV's Meritorious Service Award in 1996 in recognition of her achievements in the club ranks.

Along with her coaching duties, Allen also serves as an assistant professor at Baker in the Health, Sport and Human Performance Dept. teaching courses in Motor Learning, Sport Psychology, and Coaching Theory. Allen is a graduate of Emporia State University.

Allen has three children and lives in Lawrence, Kan.

Zach Kindler

Written by

Zach Kindler

Zach Kindler served as the Wildcat's head men's and women's cross country and track and field coach since 2007. And passed away on Monday, Aug. 4 2014 after a sudden medical emergency. He was a beloved coach, father, husband and friend of the University and will go down as one of the most successful coaches in the history of Baker Athletics.

Kindler's program reached unprecedented heights in 2012-13 with a HAAC championship in men's cross country, men's indoor track and field, women's indoor track and field, men's outdoor track and field and women's outdoor track and field.

His men's cross country squad took 10th in the NAIA Men's Cross Country National Championship meet in Vancouver, Wash., and his women's team took three runners to compete in the national meet.

During the Indoor season, Baker posted five NAIA All-Americans at the National Championship meet in Geneva, Ohio.

In the Spring, Baker finished sixth at the NAIA Women's Outdoor Track and Field meet and the men's squad took 11th nationally at the meet. Baker posted 13 NAIA All-Americans at the NAIA Outdoor National championship meet in Marian, Ind.

Under Kindler's leadership, Jeremy Gathright won the men's 400 national championship in a time of 46.62, marking the second national champion in Kindler's time as head coach at Baker. The other national champion came in 2012, when Stephanie Nelson won the women's Javelin.

During his time at Baker, coach Kindler was named Heart of America Athletic Conference Coach of the Year 15 times and won three cross country conference championships and nine track and field conference championships.

The Esbon, Kan., native came to Baldwin City after serving three years (2004-2007) at Kansas Wesleyan University in the same position. Previous to Kansas Wesleyan, Kindler served as an assistant coach at Fort Hays State University (NCAA Division II). As a student-athlete he achieved All-American status four times and Academic All-American status twice while bringing home a national title in the javelin for the Tigers. Kindler graduated with an undergraduate degree in sports management in 2001 and a master's degree in sports administration in 2003.

A website has also been created to help raise funds for Zach's wife Sara and his three children. To donate, please click here.

T-Shirts have also been created by the Baker University athletic department and are also for sale. All proceeds will go towards a Baker University student-athlete scholarship in Coach Kindler's honor. To purchase a shirt, please click here.

The Baker Athletics department is also planning to honor Coach Kindler with events on the Baldwin City campus in the future. Those will be found on the as they become available.
