Taylor Gill

Written by

TGillTaylor Gill

Taylor was recruited to play for the Wildcats by the late head football coach, Joe Girardi (Hall of Fame-2012) out of Owasso High School, Owasso (OK) where he lettered in football and track. He was an integral part of the football team as it qualified for the state playoffs each year that he played. His senior year he was the leading rusher and was both the team’s most valuable offensive back and a member of the 1st team all-district team.

His athletic success followed him to Baker where he made an immediate impact as a four-year letterman in football, was the team’s co-freshman of the year (with Bobby Bates-Hall of Fame-2011), was the starting fullback for three years, lead the team in rushing in both his sophomore and senior years, was the #8 leading rusher in the NAIA his senior year and was the team’s offensive player of the week multiple times. In addition, he was the HAAC Conference/district offensive player of the week multiple times, was a 2nd team all conference/district player his junior year, was named to the 1st team all conference/district team his senior year and was an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American his senior year. He set records for having carried the football 240 times his senior year. During his career he had 35 touchdowns-33 rushing and 2 by reception. He finished his career with 3,049 yards rushing which was at that time, the most in Baker football history.

There is no doubt that his individual achievements helped the Wildcats under Coach Girardi and then in 1980 and 1981 under Coach Charlie Richard (Hall of Fame-1995), attain accomplishments never before witnessed at Baker. During Taylor’s four years the Wildcats qualified for their first bowl game, the Boot Hill Bowl (1978), won their first two HAAC Championships (1980/1981) and set numerous national marks in offense and scoring. The teams on which he played had a combined four-year record of 32-9-1 and had their first two appearances in the NAIA national playoffs (1980 and 1981).

Following graduation he has to date enjoyed a successful 30 year actuarial career where he is a member of the American Academy of Actuaries, and the Society of Actuaries. He currently serves as Vice President, Health Services Actuarial with Wellpoint, Inc. He has three daughters, Ashley Taylor, Nicole Faith and Cassidy Hope Gill along with a step-son, Brandon Ross Mallon.
