Position: Safeties Coach

Coach Heider joins the Baker coaching staff for the first time in 2015. He attended Baker in his freshman year on a football and baseball scholarship.

He then transferred to the University of Kansas to play football from 2000-2002 as a QB/WR under former coaches Terry Allen and Mark Mangino.  He was a member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll and a Jayhawk Scholar in 2001. Graduated in 2003 with B.S. degree in Journalism and Mass Communications.

After KU he spent the last 10 years climbing the Texas High School coaching ranks.  He most recently was the Offensive Coordinator at Dallas Hillcrest High School in Dallas. He coached every position on the offensive side of the ball during time in Texas. He is married to the former Hayley Morgan of Lawrence.

Baker University Director of Athletics Theresa Yetmar announced the hiring of Baker alumnus Ryan Pitts as the new head coach of the Wildcats’ track and field program in June.

Pitts graduated from Baker in 2006 after a successful career on the football field and on the track for the ‘Cats. He was named an NAIA All-American wide receiver in 2005 and was a national indoor and outdoor qualifier in the high hurdles in 2006.

He spent the last year serving the Baker football coaching staff as the wide receivers coach and the track & field coaching staff as an assistant coach focusing on the sprints, jumps and hurdle athletes.

Coach Pitts was a key contributor to the Wildcats’ four Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships this year, as they captured the men’s and women’s indoor track & field championship and the men’s and women’s outdoor track & field championships.

Baker also qualified 15 athletes to the 2015 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in Gulf Shores, Alabama in May.

Before his coaching career at Baker, Pitts served as the head girls track and field coach at Warren High School in Downey, California, from 2010 to 2012 and was the assistant track and field coach at North Torrance High School in Torrance, California, from 2007 to 2010.

Pitts will now primarily take over as the head track and field coach at Baker but will work alongside Tim Byers, the newly hired director of cross country and track and field.

Coach Byers will oversee the cross country programs as the head coach, while also serving Coach Pitts as an assistant track and field coach.

Cody Garcia, the head coach at Bethany College since 2014, is the new head coach of the Baker University wrestling program, Baker University Director of Athletics Theresa Yetmar announced in June.

Coach Garcia will be the third head coach in program history succeeding Jimmy May and Pete Di Pol.

Garcia served as an assistant wrestling coach for the Swedes for three years before taking over as head coach during the 2014 season.

In 2014, the Swedes finished 20th at the NAIA National Championships, where Colby Crank was the 149-pound national runner-up. Seven total individuals qualified for the national championships, the highest number in program history.

This past season, Garcia led Bethany to a second place finish in the Kansas Cup competition inside Baker’s Collins Center and he helped lead 149-pound wrestler Victor Hughes to an All-America honor, the second in program history.

Garcia came to Bethany from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he served as a student assistant wrestling coach. While at UNO, Garcia coached the 2011 squad to a NCAA Division II National Championship.

Prior to coaching, Garcia was a member of the UNO wrestling team, winning individual national championships in 2006 and 2008, runner-up in 2010, and finishing third in 2009. His team won National Championships in 2005, 2006, 2009, and 2010.

He was a four-time All-American and Academic All-American, graduating in 2010 with a 147-18 record, the fourth-highest number of all-time career wins at UNO since 1966. His 48 wins as a senior ranked as the second-highest number in school history, and Garcia set new UNO records of 84 career pins and 31 single-season pins.

Garcia was a three-time high school state champion and four-time state place finisher at Hutchinson High School, where he wrestled for his father, Mike.

Garcia will join the Baker family with his wife Kym and three children, Milayna, Elyza and Adryn.

Baker University Director of Athletics Theresa Yetmar announced the hiring of Ryan Goodwin as the university’s new head baseball coach. The Lawrence, Kansas native will join the athletics staff effective July 1.

Goodwin comes to Baker after serving as the head coach at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas for the past two seasons.

In his first season at Wiley in 2014, Goodwin helped improve the Wildcats’ win total by 15 games and led Wiley to its first appearance in the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament since 2011.

Wiley also garnered six Red River All-Conference players in 2014, including one First Team All-Conference performer and five Second Team selections.

Coach Goodwin has local ties to the Baldwin City area, as he graduated from Lawrence High School.

He has also coached at nearly every collegiate level, serving as the assistant baseball coach at NCAA Division I Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi from 2010-11. He served as the pitching coach and shared recruiting coordinating duties while at Jackson State.

Goodwin bookended his time at Jackson State as the assistant baseball coach at NCAA Division II Washburn University and in 2012 helped lead the Ichabods to its best record in 12 years.

He also served as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Neosho County Community College from 2004-07. Neosho won a school record 44 games in 2006 while having Goodwin on staff and won the KJCCC Eastern Division Championship.

Goodwin played baseball at Highland Community College before a successful pitching career at the University of South Dakota where he still holds the career saves record and helped set the teams school record for team wins in 1999 with 27.

Position: Tight Ends Coach - Football

Josh Saunders joins the Baker University football coaching staff officially for the first time in 2015, as he previously worked for the team on a volunteer basis, he will help lead the tight end group.

Saunders had a successful playing career with Baker under Hall of Fame head coach Pat Richard. He still holds the school record in sacks in a game with four in 1994.

Position: Graduate Assistant Coach - Men's Basketball

Jamison Carmichael is in his first season with the Baker University men’s basketball team as the Graduate Assistant Coach. He graduated from the University of Kansas in May of 2015 with a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management and a minor in Business. He will be completing the MLA program at Baker University during his time on staff.

Most recently Jamison interned under head coach Larry Brown and the men’s basketball staff at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Where he was part of an American Athletic Conference regular season and AAC Tournament Championship. During his time at SMU the team saw there first NCAA Tournament appearance in 22 years. Jamison also has experience with AAU basketball as he has worked for MoKan the past two summers.

Jamison was born and raised in Manhattan, Kansas. Where he attended Manhattan High School. Jamison is the son of Janelle and Dan Russell. He is the younger brother of Jackie Carmichael, who currently plays Professional Basketball for Banvit Basketball Club in Bandirma, Turkey, and Catherine Carmichael who is the Assistant Director of Recruiting for the University of Kansas football team. Jamison also has a younger brother, Christian, who is a senior at Manhattan High School.

Lima is a native of Curitiba, Brazil and played at fellow NAIA institution Park University. Began his coaching career in 2011 with the premier club team Soccer Kemistry and currently coaches for Fusion FC in Kansas City.

Nomination Procedures

Anyone is eligible to write an open letter of nomination regarding an individual they believe to be worthy of induction to the Baker University Athletic Hall of Fame. The nominations must be received by December 31 to be considered for induction during the next calendar year. Once an individual is nominated, he or she remain in an active file for review by the Hall of Fame Selection Committee. The selection committee sends recommendations in the spring to the President of the University for final approval for fall induction.
