During your time at Baker, you will be eligible for various types of financial aid and scholarships. General academic scholarships and scholarships for participation in campus activities are awarded starting your freshman year. Departmental scholarships awarded for academic excellence are awarded annually at the Honors Symposium, held each spring. Each scholarship stipulates in which year of study you are eligible.

The Department of Behavioral and Health Sciences awards the Mildred Hunt Riddle Departmental Recognition Scholarship. This financial prize is applied to the following year's tuition.

Chemistry
Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry
Small classes ensure that you will work closely with faculty, both in the classroom and laboratory. You will also get plenty of hands-on experience with the latest equipment.
Our chemistry majors, regardless of whether they pursue a career, grad school or med school after graduation, report that they feel better prepared for their next step than their peers from other schools.
Original Research
The majority of our chemistry majors work with a faculty member on a research project, and some of our laboratory courses include student-designed projects.
Internships & Summer Research
- During January Interterm many students shadow a physician or professional chemist.
- The majority of our majors find full-time summer work in a chemical laboratory or in a research program at a major university.
Preparation for Med School
- A major in chemistry is a strong choice for students who plan to attend medical school.
- Of those who apply, Baker students are accepted into medical school at a 78% rate. The national average is 44%.
Preparation for Grad School
- Two recent Baker chemistry majors were offered KU's most prestigious scholarship, the Madison and Lila Self Graduate Fellowship.
- A recent graduate earned her Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University.
Preparation for a Career
Baker chemistry majors find employment in a variety of fields:
- Chief scientist at Oncimmune, which develops technology for early cancer detection
- Manager of quality assurance at Aptuit, a pharmaceutical services company
- Forensic chemist for the FBI
- Analysts in environmental chemistry and chemical synthesis

Student Experience
Chemistry Student Experience
Baker chemistry students have a multitude of opportunities for involvement in and out of the classroom. Small class sizes allow you to get maximum interaction with classmates and professors. Chemistry students are also privy to a number of activities beyond the classroom.
Lab Time
As part of the Baker curriculum, most of your courses in chemistry and the sciences will be accompanied by a lab period, in which you will be actively engaged in the practical application of scientific theories. Recognizing that application is essential in the natural and physical sciences, our curriculum provides you ample opportunity to be involved in research in and out of the classroom.
REUs
Baker students have been successful in obtaining Research Experiences for Undergraduates. Held at major research universities in the summer, REUs are opportunities for undergraduate students in the fields of math, science and technology to take part in major research projects. REUs can offer you experience in various practical applications of scientific theories and principles.
Internships
At Baker, we encourage students to engage in as many real-world experiences as possible, allowing you to earn practical experience while developing the skills and knowledge needed in the many fields you may want to enter with your degree in chemistry.

Business Programs
The Department of Business and Economics offers a major and minor in business with three possible concentrations: finance, marketing and management. Those interested in the study of business may also look into the following disciplines offered at Baker University’s Baldwin City undergraduate campus:

Major in Business
All students majoring in accounting, business or international business must complete a common core of classes emphasizing fundamental concepts in business and economics.
The following common core courses are required:

A student who has a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher may substitute an appropriately designed independent study for one of the elective courses listed above, subject to prior approval by the department chair.
Incoming students who have completed at least 9 hours of business or economics classes are not required to enroll in BS 141.
Bachelor of Arts degree candidates must complete demonstrate proficiency in a world language sufficient to satisfy the requirements for the B.A. degree.

The Department of Mass Media and Visual Arts offers participation scholarships. Art participation scholarships are available to students who are active in art courses and other campus activities connected to the department. To apply for a scholarship you must submit a scholarship application.
If you're interested in studio art, you should also submit a portfolio. Instructions for submitting a portfolio are outlined on the scholarship application.
