MLA Portfolio or Thesis

MLA Portfolio

All MLA students are required to develop a professional portfolio of educational artifacts.

The professional portfolio of educational artifacts addresses program objectives and course content and application. This portfolio serves as a learning resume, documenting each student's personal growth and professional development and is completed during the last term of the program. The portfolio requires a grade of Proficient or Distinguished for graduation.

The MLA portfolio is compiled in three parts: a written precourse paper and video; a collection of artifacts from your MLA program coursework with inclusion forms to explain your artifacts; and a final survey, video, and paper. This collection shows evidence that you have experienced growth during the program and have developed the following essential characteristics:

  • A strong knowledge base
  • Enriched written communication skills
  • Oral communication skills
  • Organization skills
  • Decision-making skills
  • Critical-thinking skills

What is a pre-course paper and what information should I include in it?

You will write your precourse paper in HUM 5500. It consists of a two-page word picture of who you are and what you want to achieve from the MLA program. The precourse paper lists the aspects of the program that prompted you to enroll, your academic goals, and your expectations of the MLA program. After you write your precourse paper, you will also create a one-minute video in HUM 5500.

What type of artifacts should be included?

The artifacts are papers and projects you have selected and saved throughout your program's coursework to demonstrate your growth. These artifacts should be assignments graded or assessed by the instructor of the course. Please be sure to save these items on your personal computer because you will not be able to access them through Moodle once the course is over. You will need three artifacts, one from each core areas of the MLA program:

  • Creative arts (LIT, THR, ART, MSC, FLM, COM)
  • History and ideas (HIS, PHIL, CUL, REL)
  • Sciences: (GEO, POL, PSY, SOC, BIO, SCI, ECO, HTH, SOS)

When is my portfolio due and when should I start saving my artifacts?

You will enroll in the portfolio course, HUM 5900, in your last semester at Baker. This is a graduation requirement in addition to the 36-credit-hour program. There is no cost for this course. Start saving your graded assignments with your first MLA course. When it is time to create your MLA portfolio you can chose which artifacts to include.

How do I deliver my portfolio?

You will present your portfolio at an online MLA portfolio presentation with others who are finishing the program. Presentations are scheduled during the HUM 5900 portfolio course with the department chair.

How will the portfolio be assessed?

Your portfolio will be assessed using the MLA portfolio rubrics
