Position: Assistant Football Coach - Running Backs
Bruce Young brings over 40 years of football coaching experience to the Baker University staff. The central Iowa native and four-year football lettermen at Northwest Missouri State University, Young spent 28 years as a head high school coach in Missouri. Voted as a member of the Missouri High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 1999, Young amassed nearly 200 wins in his long term high school career.
At Norborne, his team of 20 players advanced to the semi-final game. At Young’s next stop with Marceline High School, they played in the first ever “Show Me Bowl” games played in St. Louis’ Busch stadium, where all 6 classes of teams came together for the state championships. Young helped build the foundation for one of the most tradition rich high school programs in the KC Metro area at Ray-Pec. While coaching there in the 1980’s and 90’s, the Panthers sent over a dozen football players to play for the Baker Wildcats.
Retiring from high school in 2000, Young came to Baker University for his first stop with the Wildcats. While at BU they played in 2 bowl games, with Young coaching the running backs and special teams.
Leaving in 2004, Coach Young headed to Avila University where he was the head coach for five years. During his tenure with the Eagles, team grade point averages improved, they had 6 Academic All-Americans, and boosted a 90% graduation rate. In his final season, Avila posted one of their best records ever, plus winning their first bowl game in the schools history, the First Down Classic win over Doane College.
After stepping down from Avila in 2009, Coach Grossner recruited Young back to Baker, returning to coach the running backs and help in the special teams area. Since returning, Young has helped in the development of some of the Wildcats best young prospects in the backfield. Long known for his “old school” coaching style, using hard work, fundamentals and playing with great intensity, Young has quickly gained the respect of Wildcat players. Assisting with recruiting efforts, Young has expanded Baker’s reach into the state of Missouri.
Coach Young and his wife, Dwyla have three grown daughters, Julie, Lindy and Kara.
