Position: Head Volleyball Coach
Since taking the helm of the Baker volleyball program in 1998, Kathy Allen has established herself as one of the most successful coaches in Baker volleyball history. As Allen enters her 18th season with the Wildcats, she has established a winning tradition year in and year out. The Cats are perpetual conference contenders, consistently finishing in the top four in the tough Heart of America Athletic Conference.
Coach Allen enters the 2015 season with a career record of 370-211, becoming Baker's all-time victories leader in all sports surpassing former head men's basketball coach Rick Weaver who collected 337 career victories from 1985-2010. She currently ranks 25th on the NAIA Top 25 career wins chart and 14th on the NAIA Top 25 winning percentages list.
At Baker, Allen has coached five All-Americans and numerous players to region and conference honors. Her players also excel in the classroom: 26 players have been recognized as NAIA Scholar-Athletes, including Shannon Bond, Danielle French and Sara Slater in 2014. The team was recognized in 2010 by the AVCA and the NAIA with an overall GPA of 3.47.
Baker compiled a record of 16-16 in 2014 and finished in a tie for fourth-place in the Hear standings. Under he leadership, Baker posted four Heart All-Conference performers.
In 2013, Allen led the 'Cats to within one victory of the 2013 NAIA Volleyball National Championship Opening Round, as they took on No. 1 seeded MidAmerica Nazarene in the HAAC Championship Tournament match, falling to the Pioneers in four sets. The Wildcats went 23-9 overall and posted its sixth 20-win season in seven years. The Wildcats finished in a tie for second-place in the HAAC standings with a 7-2 record. Under her leadership, Hannah Bettge was named the 2013 HAAC Freshman of the Year and Bettge and teammate Renata Dill were each named to the HAAC First Team All-Conference.
In 2012, the Wildcats went 19-14 overall and 6-3 in the Heart and finished fourth in the regular season conference standings. Allen helped lead three Wildcats to 2012 HAAC All-Conference First-Team honors including Boss, Savannah Smith and Danielle French and French was named the HAAC Freshman of the Year. Dill also earned a spot on the HAAC Second Team All-Conference and Turner was named to the HAAC Honorable Mention All-Conference team.
Allen had one of her finest years at Baker in 2011, leading the Wildacats to a HAAC regular season crown and an overall record of 26-11 and conference mark of 10-0.
Prior to joining the Baker coaching staff, Allen served as the interim head coach at Washburn University in Topeka and as a graduate assistant coach at Emporia State University. Allen coached high school volleyball at St. Mary's High School before entering the college ranks.
Allen has amassed many years of service in club volleyball, dating back to 1989 when she formed the Topeka Juniors Volleyball Club. Allen served as director and a member of the board for more than 10 years, helping guide the club to two national championships and recognition as one of the premier clubs in Kansas. Allen received USAV's Meritorious Service Award in 1996 in recognition of her achievements in the club ranks.
Along with her coaching duties, Allen also serves as an assistant professor at Baker in the Health, Sport and Human Performance Dept. teaching courses in Motor Learning, Sport Psychology, and Coaching Theory. Allen is a graduate of Emporia State University.
Allen has three children and lives in Lawrence, Kan.
