Jason Thoren enters his tenth season at Baker and his ninth season overseeing the defense. Under his direction the Wildcat defensive tradition has been rebuilt to consistently perform as one of the top units in the NAIA.
The 2012 Baker defense helped lead the Wildcats to an 8-3 overall record and appearance in the NAIA Football Championship Series Playoffs. The defense ranked 19th in the NAIA in passing yards allowed per game at 171. Thoren's defense also allowed just 20.3 points per game ranking No. 22 in the country. In seven of the Wildcats eight victories, Baker held its opponents to under 20 points.
Under Thoren's leadership, sophomore defensive end Andre Jolly led the NAIA with 16 sacks and was named a 2012 NAIA-AFCA All-American.
In 2011, the Wildcat defense finished 6th in the NAIA in forced turnovers (35) , 11th in the NAIA in rush defense (98.4), 8th in the NAIA in opponent third down percentage (26.7), 16th in the NAIA in opponent first downs (167), 22nd in the NAIA in scoring defense (20.2), and 26th in the NAIA in pass defense efficiency (108.8).
The Wildcat defense finished the 2010 campaign ranked nationally as the 11th best team in scoring defense (15.7), the 16th best team in opponent third down percentage (30.1), and the 20th best team against the run (113).
In 2009, the Baker defense finished the season ranked 6th in the NAIA in total defense (262.9), 7th in the NAIA in pass defense (153.8), 7th in the NAIA in turnovers forced (31), 15th in the NAIA in opponent third down percentage (30.8), 16th in the NAIA in sacks (28), and 24th in the NAIA in scoring defense (18.9).
Before coming to Baldwin City, Thoren spent three years as a graduate assistant working with the offensive line and tight ends at NCAA Division I University of Minnesota. The Lawrence High product was a starting linebacker for the Kansas Jayhawks from 1994 to 1997 where he was an All-Big 8 and All-Big 12 selection. Thoren ended his Jayhawk career with 306 total tackles. In 2000 Thoren signed a free agent contract with the Kansas City Chiefs where he competed with the Berlin Thunder of NFL Europe. During his high school playing career, Thoren was the recipient of the Simone Award which is given to the most outstanding high school player in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
