| Research Spotlight: Jaclyn Kettler |
 |
Baker political science/international studies major and library worker Jaclyn Kettler signed a contract with Sage to publish an essay, co-written with Dr. Bruce Anderson, in the Encyclopedia of Campaigns, Elections, and Electoral Behavior.
Of the writing itself, Kettler explains that her research relied on historical sources. "Everything I used came from books, which is different because I'm used to using so many online articles."

BAKER READING SHELF: ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR MARC CARTER
This semester we're rolling out a new feature for the newsletter: the Baker Reading Shelf. In it, a faculty or staff member will list four or five books -- fiction or nonfiction on whatever topic -- and briefly describe what makes each book memorable to him or her. In this way, we believe, we can learn more about each other and hear about great books that we may have hitherto missed out on. In the future we hope to have library space in which to display the books and write-ups. If you'd like to read one of the books listed here, links to the Baker catalog or an Interlibrary Loan form are provided below each description.
Associate Professor of Psychology Marc Carter provided us with the titles and descriptions for this inaugural edition of the Baker Reading Shelf. Thanks, Marc! (Click here for the complete reading list!) |

CHAUTAUQUA SERIES During the week of June 18th you may see 5th through 8th graders flitting through the library in pursuit of the stories and characters of Baldwin City's past as part of the Baldwin City Chautauqua. Stop by to see the library display featuring the four historical characters (and I do mean characters) who will be portrayed in the big tent during the week of June 18th: Featured are William Allen White, Carry Nation, John R. Brinkley, and Langston Hughes.
The Youth Chautauqua Camp will work under the guidance of Joyce Thierer and Ann Birney (Ride into History) to delve into the life of one of the characters from Baldwin City's past, develop a script and costume, get a little actor coaching, and, finally, on Friday evening, June 22nd they will present the compelling stories of "their" characters under the big tent at the corner of 6th and Grove for the public. The camp runs from 2:00 to 5:00, Monday June 18 through Friday June 22nd.
If you know of any young people who would enjoy participating in this camp or if you know an adult who would like to work with these young people, contact Tony Brown (abrown@bakeru.edu). Participation is free, but registration is required.
