Jazz Ensemble to present concert
Baldwin City, Kan. — The Baker University Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of J.D. Parr, professor of music, will present the annual Chris Grubb Memorial Scholarship Concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 29, at Rice Auditorium. Admission is free but donations will be accepted at the door.
Mike Steinel, professor of music at the University of North Texas, will be the special guest. Steinel, one of the nation's premier jazz composers, trumpeters and a native Kansan, will be featured in several of his own compositions, including "Samba de los Gatos,” which was commissioned by the Baker Jazz Ensemble in 1990. "Gatos" premiered at the Kansas Music Educators Convention in Wichita that year, and has become one of Steinel's most popular and best-selling compositions.
Before the concert, Steinel will offer clinics in improvisation, jazz performance techniques, and jazz trumpet styles.
The scholarship concert will also feature the newly formed Baker Jazz Combo, featuring saxophonist Scott Marks, drummer Nate Deel, bassist Matt Ingram, guitarist Drew Patton and vocalist JaNay Adgers.
