"The goal of the Speech Center is to help Baker University students effectively communicate because what we say is significant and has the potential to change the lives of those around us," said Kim Schaefer, assistant professor of communication. "In a world today that is moving faster than ever before, the ability to communicate effectively has never been in higher demand. At Baker, we want to graduate students that can clearly articulate the ideas they fostered during their years here."

Communication is one of the four major objectives of Baker's Quest program.

"As students practice and learn communication competency, the Speech Center will help provide the tools they will need for their journey," Schaefer told students, faculty and staff at the grand opening. "Whether students are giving their first individual presentation on campus or are interviewing for internships or job opportunities, we want to be there every step of the way so they can competently articulate their ideas."

Peer speech consultants will assist students at the center. The consultants are trained to give helpful and supportive feedback and are ready to help students, faculty and staff with skills in individual presentations, group presentations, fielding interview questions, or working on being a more competent communicator.

The center, funded by a majors as home grant, is open to all faculty, students, and staff at Baker. Appointment times are available from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The consultants recommend 48 hours notice in scheduling appointments and at least one day between appointments and speaking engagements.

Baker University is committed to assuring student learning, and developing confident, competent and responsible contributors to society.
