Classes to begin Wednesday

Baldwin City, Kan. — Residence halls at Baker University open at 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19. The first day of classes begin Wednesday, Aug. 24.

Here are the Welcome Week activities planned for Aug. 20-Aug. 25:

8 a.m.: Residence halls open.

8 a.m.-2 p.m.: Take student photo identifications in lower level of Collins Library

9 a.m.-1 p.m.: Founders Bookstore will be open

10 a.m.-noon: Choir auditions for returning students, Owens Musical Arts Building

11 a.m.-1 p.m.: Lunch. Fall meal plan begins for residential students

2 p.m.: Parents send-off session, Rice Auditorium

2 p.m.-4 p.m.: Choir auditions for returning students only, Owens Musical Arts Building

4 p.m.: First orientation meetings with FYE and transfer student groups, Collins Gym

5 p.m.-6:15 p.m.: All-campus picnic and activities fair, Hartley Plaza

6:15 p.m.: Class 2009 group photo, steps of Parmenter Hall

6:30 p.m.: Freshmen and transfers line up for Traditions Walk, Hartley Plaza

6:45 p.m.: Wildcat Welcome Night. The ceremonial event will introduce you to the history and traditions of Baker University

8:15 p.m.: Casino Night, Harter Union Cafeteria

9:30 a.m.: Meet the university minister at brunch, lower level, Osborne Chapel

10:15 a.m.: Welcome Week Chapel Service, Osborne Chapel

10 a.m.-noon: Students are welcome to attend any of the church services in the community. A list of Baldwin City churches will be posted around campus

10:30 a.m.-noon: Brunch, Harter Union cafeteria

Noon: Fraternity life orientation meeting, basement of Gessner Hall

1 p.m.: Campus work informational meeting, Rice Auditorium

2 p.m.-5 p.m.: Choir auditions for new and returning students, Owens Musical Arts Building

3 p.m.: “Hey, I Have a Question,” John Frazier, Dean of Students, and staff offer answers to frequently asked questions regarding student life, Rice Auditorium

5 p.m.-6:30 p.m.: Dinner, Harter Union cafeteria

5 p.m.-7 p.m.: Sorority life orientation picnic, Irwin Hall front lawn

7:30 p.m.: FYE and transfer student group meetings, various locations

8:45 p.m.: Multicultural affairs reception, Harter Union Lobby

9:30 p.m.: Student Activities Council presents Chris Carter, one of the world’s most skilled “thought readers/mentalists,” Rice Auditorium. Cool off with a couple of scoops of ice cream after the event, Rice Auditorium lobby

7:15 a.m.-9 a.m.: Breakfast, Harter Union dining room

8 a.m.-5 p.m.: Founders Bookstore open

9 a.m.-11 a.m.: Community service project, meet in Harter Union cafeteria

11 a.m.: Transfer student chat session, Mabee 100

11 a.m.-12:45 p.m.: Lunch, Harter Union dining room

Noon-12:30 p.m.: Commuter student chat

1 p.m.-3 p.m.: Campus work job fair, Mabee Gym

5 p.m.-6:15 p.m.: Dinner, Harter Union cafeteria

6:30 p.m.: Sorority recruitment activities begin

7:15 p.m.: Fraternity recruitment activities begin

7:30 p.m.: Game night, Gessner and Irwin Halls

10 p.m.: New student mixer, Harter Union cafeteria

7:15 a.m.-9 a.m.: Breakfast, Harter Union cafeteria

10 a.m.-11 a.m.: “Making College Count, The Ultimate Road Trip,” Rice Auditorium

11:45 a.m.: Pre-med, pre-dental, pre-vet student orientation, Harter Union lower level
