Students among top placers in creative writing at Sigma Tau International

Baldwin City, Kan. — Two Baker University students were among the top placers over the weekend in creative writing at Sigma Tau Delta International 2009 in Minneapolis, Minn.

Ashley Sims, Meade, and Brianna Lichtenauer, Shawnee, placed second and third, respectively, in original poetry.

There were more than 800 participants from 167 colleges and universities at the event.

Additionally, the Baker chapter was presented with an award honoring its 25th year. Lucy Price, professor of English, is the Baker sponsor for Sigma Tau Delta. Marti Mihalyi, adjunct instructor, English, accompanied the students to Minneapolis.

Artist and Lecture Series to conclude season

Baldwin City, Kan. — The Baker University Artist and Lecture Series will feature the final event of the 2008-2009 season at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, in McKibbin Recital Hall on the Baldwin City campus.

Margaret D. Lowman, a renowned scientist, author and educator, will appear as the Milford White Memorial Lecture speaker. Known as “Canopy Meg,” Lowman serves as professor of biology and environmental studies and serves as the director of environmental initiatives at New College of Florida.

An advocate for forest conservation, Lowman has written more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications and four books.  Lowman’s life as a scientist and adventurer has enabled her to travel to remote jungles worldwide and she shares those experiences through her lectures.

Community Wellness Festival canceled

Baldwin City, Kan. — The Community Wellness Festival, a free health fair scheduled for Saturday, March 28, at the Collins Center on the Baker University campus in Baldwin City, has been canceled because of the threat of a winter storm. The event will not be rescheduled.

Anyone who preregistered for a health screening can have their lab work completed by the end of April at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Baker University to be host to informational meeting at Ottawa City Hall

Baker University’s School of Professional and Graduate Studies will be host to an informational meeting at 6 p.m., Thursday, April 2, at Ottawa City Hall, 101 S. Hickory St. Anyone interested in learning more about accelerated business degree programs for working adults is welcome.

The meeting will provide information on Baker's business and management programs designed specifically for working adults. Baker's accelerated format allows students to complete their degrees in about two years.

Degree programs are available at several campus locations, including Overland Park, Topeka and Wichita in Kansas, and Lee's Summit, and Kansas City in Missouri. New online programs are also being offered.
