What type of aid is available for undergraduate students at the School of Professional and Graduate Studies?
- Federal PELL Grant - Targeted to highest-need students
- Federal SEOG Grant - Targeted to Federal Pell Grant recipients
- Federal Direct Subsidized Stafford Loan - Based on need. Interest free while you are in school and for six months after you are less than half time.
- Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan - Not based on need. Interest (for which you are responsible) accrues while you are in school. You have the option of paying the interest while you’re in school, or having it added to the principal when you go into repayment (six months after you are less than half time).
- Federal Direct PLUS Loan - Available to parents of dependent students. Interest accrues while you are in school. Repayment begins 60 days after the loan is fully disbursed for the academic year.
What type of aid is available for graduate students at the School of Professional and Graduate Studies and the School of Education?
- Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan - Not based on need. Interest (for which you are responsible) accrues while you are in school. You have the option of paying the interest while you’re in school or having it added to the principal when you go into repayment (six months after your last day of class).
- Federal Direct Grad Plus Loan - Available to graduate students. Interest accrues after funds are disbursed, but can be deferred as long as you are enrolled at least half time. The interest is added to the principle. Repayment begins 60 days after student is less than half time.
How much can I borrow?
The maximum amounts available are listed below.*

BBA, BBL, BMM, BSA and BSM programs – dependent students
$6,500 Year 1 (if less than 48 hours transferred) or
$7,500 Year 1 (if 48 or more hours transferred)
Year 2 is prorated based on credits and weeks remaining.
BBA, BBL, BMM, BSA and BSM programs – independent students
$10,500 Year 1 (if less than 48 hours transferred) or
$12,500 Year 1 (if 48 or more hours transferred)
Year 2 is prorated based on credits and weeks remaining.
*Please note: Maximum amounts are listed above; you may or may not qualify for the maximum.
MBA, MAOL and EdD degree program – $20,500 for each loan year of at least 24 credits and 30 weeks, varies by program. The maximum loan limit can exceed the direct costs of tuition and books.
MLA, MSSL and MAED degree programs – Amount varies by enrollment period, number of credit hours and length of courses (or number of class sessions). Maximum loan eligibility can exceed the direct costs of tuition and books. Exceptions to FA eligibility are listed below:
- Financial aid cannot be awarded for the MSSL Directed Field Experience (DFE).
- Continuing education courses do not qualify for financial aid.
Are scholarships available?
Baker University does not offer institutional scholarships to students at the School of Professional and Graduate Studies or graduate students at the School of Education; however, additional funds may be available through one or more of the following sources:

What is the timeframe involved in receiving my funds?
Once the official roster has been issued verifying that you are attending class, your loan application will be certified. You will receive an award letter during your first class, if possible. You should sign the award letter and return it to us immediately so the first loan funds can be disbursed. Please note: Your award letter will state the projected disbursement dates.
How do I receive my funds?
Your loan funds will be disbursed directly to Baker University either electronically or by paper check. You will be mailed notification when EFT funds have been applied by Accounting. Please be aware that you must be attending class before the scheduled disbursement will be released.
Paper checks are made co-payable by the lender to you and Baker University. Checks will be mailed to you for endorsement and must be returned to our Accounting Office in order for the money to be posted to your account.
There are usually two disbursements per loan period: the first near the beginning of your coursework, and the second after you have earned half of the credits for the loan period.
How do I receive a credit balance?
Many students opt to keep their money on account for ease of subsequent payments. However, if you choose to have the credit balance returned, it is important that the EFT release form or the endorsed check(s) be returned to us immediately. Checks for financial aid credit balances will be mailed to your home address approximately two weeks after our Accounting Office receives your endorsed loan check(s) and/or request for credit balance.
How do I defer my undergraduate student loans?
You must contact your current loan servicer(s) and request an “In-School Deferment Form” (either Direct Loan or FFELP). You will need to complete and mail the form to the Office of the Registrar at Baker University, PO Box 65, Baldwin City, KS 66006 or fax it to 785.594.4521. The form will then be completed and returned to your loan servicer(s) once your class has started.
When do I begin making payments?
Federal Stafford Loan repayment begins six months after the student is less than half time. Federal Direct PLUS loan repayment begins 60 days after the second half of the loan has been disbursed by the lender for the academic year.
How often do I have to reapply?
Business Degree Programs: Financial aid is limited to a maximum loan year of 12 months. The first loan amount will cover, at minimum, the first 24 credits and 30 weeks of your program. You will need to complete a new FAFSA and other forms before your second loan year. If an undergraduate and the second loan year is less than 24 credits and 30 weeks, your second loan amount will be prorated based on the credit hours remaining in your program.
GLAE Degree Programs: Financial aid is limited to a maximum loan period of 12 months, or the consecutive terms in which you are enrolled. You may need to complete a new FAFSA and other forms to renew your aid for each enrollment period. You must be continuously enrolled in order to receive financial aid. That is, you must be enrolled in at least one course per term (Fall I, Fall II, Interterm, Spring I, Spring II, Summer I and Summer II).
What happens if I withdraw?
Financial aid is based on the percentage of time that you remain enrolled. If you plan to withdraw from a course or a program, you must notify our Student Services in writing. A refund will be calculated once the Student Services office provides us with official notification of your withdrawal. Institutional charges and financial aid are adjusted once the withdrawal date is determined. For more details, refer to the Course Catalog and Student Handbook.
What is a "Leave of Absence"?
If you experience a serious medical, family or scheduling problem greater than two weeks, you can request a Leave of Absence. To avoid jeopardizing your Financial Aid, this Leave is not to exceed 90 days per 12-month period. It is possible for more than one Leave to be granted, provided the total days of Leave do not exceed 90 days per 12-month period.
Your first step should be to contact Student Services immediately regarding a proposed schedule change. If approved by Student Services, you must then request your Leave of Absence in writing before beginning your Leave. Letters should be directed to the Financial Aid Office and must bear your signature per the requirements of the U.S. Department of Education. Because of the signature requirement, we request that you mail or fax us your request. Electronic signatures are not valid in this instance. In emergency situations, we may accept your written request after Leave has begun. Your loan repayment will not begin during this time period provided you have followed the steps necessary to gain an approved Leave of Absence. If you do not return from your approved Leave of Absence, we will use your last day of class attendance before your Leave when calculating repayment scheduling.

How does company reimbursement affect my aid?
You can still apply for federal aid even if you will receive 100% company reimbursement for tuition and books. However, estimated company reimbursement and outside scholarships must be taken into account when aid eligibility is determined.
Will my application be kept confidential?
All records are held in strict confidence. Information related to your academic, financial aid or accounting files will be released only to you and only with proper identification. If you want other parties (including your spouse) to have access to this information, you must submit a notarized letter of authorization on a separate piece of paper to each individual office.
