Weather Procedures
Your safety is important. Baker University has established policies and procedures to ensure your safety during severe weather. Check www.bakerU.edu/weather for class cancellation announcements in the case of inclement weather.
Winter Weather Policy
Because of the unique nature of the Baker University accelerated programs, all classes missed because of inclement weather must be made up. Experience has demonstrated that weather and road conditions can change dramatically during the midday hours. Therefore, Baker University will determine class cancellations at 2 p.m. The decision to close takes into consideration student safety and inconvenience caused to students and faculty when makeup is required. Master or Arts in Education cohorts do not meet if the host district closes schools.
The announcement of class cancellation due to inclement weather will be posted on your student portal page, on the SPGS home page, the School of Education home page and at www.bakerU.edu/weather by 3 p.m. Notification will be sent to all students enrolled in classes that evening to the students' Baker e-mail account. Class representatives are asked to ensure that all members of the class, including drop-in students, receive the information.
Either before or during the next scheduled class meeting, the group and the instructor will determine a date for the makeup session. Extending the calendar cannot be considered because it would affect graduation deadlines, completion dates, instructor assignments, planned holidays for students, VA benefits and financial aid. Because facility availability is another factor in scheduling makeup class sessions, Baker University also accommodates class makeup sessions on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings. The instructor will inform the University of the group’s decision, and the Student Services staff will e-mail the members of the class to confirm the classroom location for the makeup session.
Severe Weather Policy & Procedure
In the event of severe weather warnings (dangerous thunderstorms or tornado warnings), the following procedures will be followed in all Baker University classroom complexes:
- The educational resources assistant on duty monitors weather forecasts and announcements. If a weather warning is issued, she or he will visit each classroom and notify faculty and students about the situation.
- Faculty and students are advised to follow the emergency procedures recommended by emergency management sources:
- Seek shelter immediately.
- Remain in the building. Occupants should not attempt to vacate the premises, drive or seek shelter in cars.
- Evacuate all offices, rooms and hallways with windows and glass or with exterior walls.
- Move to designated interior rooms and areas and, if possible, take shelter under tables or desks. Every attempt should be made to put as many walls as possible between occupants and the outside.
- Lie low with hands covering the back of your head to reduce injury.
- Wait for an all-clear signal before resuming activity.
- When a severe weather warning is lifted, the educational resources assistant will notify each instructor.
