New Military Retesting Policy

Defense Activity for Non Traditional Education Support (DANTES) does not fund retesting on a previously funded exam title for College Level Examination Program (CLEP), Subject Standardized Tests (DSST) and Excelsior College Exam (ECE) paper-based or computer-based exams.

  • Service members who do not receive a passing score will not be allowed to retest as DANTES-funded candidates on a previously funded exam of the same title.
  • Service members may personally fund a retest after waiting the requisite period of time. This includes spouses and Civil Service personnel of Reserve components and Coast Guard.
  • If examinees retake a previously funded exam without paying the requisite fees at the time of testing, their scores will not be transmitted to their respective service transcript.

Overall, the pass rate the first time for most of the exams is about 50 percent.

Of those who do not pass the first time, about 65 percent of them fail the exam again.

NOTE: Many students call DSST exams DANTES exams. DANTES covers CLEP, DSST and ECE.
