Baker@150.CAS.Progress.012

July 31, 2003

This is volume one, number two of an electronic bulletin designed to chronicle the planning process and organizational development within CAS as we join the rest of the University in the Baker@150 campaign for campus-wide growth and improvement.

Baker@150.CAS.Progress is produced by Dr. Jamie Comstock, Vice President and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, in collaboration with contributors from across CAS.

Web Services Administrator Hired:

Toby Ebel Advances to this Key Post

Congratulations to Toby Ebel, who assumes the role of Web Services Administrator, effective tomorrow, August 1, which also happens to be his second anniversary as a member of the Baker community. Toby will continue to assist as needed with the transition in Records and Registration until the new Records Coordinator is in place.

As Web Services Administrator, Toby's priorities will be to invigorate Baker's electronic communications both externally and internally by revitalizing the Baker Web site and moving many publications to the online environment.  In this new arrangement, departments will still be responsible for updating content on their web pages.  Toby will conduct workshops to train faculty and staff designated to maintain departmental pages.

Web Advisory Board to have input
Re-designing the Web site is a complex undertaking that will unfold in phases.  Toby will need to focus on creating a new Web site design, while at the same time, ensuring that our current site is maintained properly. Therefore, his priorities will need to be carefully articulated.  A Web Advisory Board comprised of representatives from across the University will soon be formed to identify improvements and additions to the Web site and to help set priorities.   A Web Management Team consisting of Annette Galluzzi,Vice President of Marketing, Bonnie Postlethwaite, Associate Dean of Information Services, and Toby Ebel, will work together to finalize design and technical direction based on the recommendations of the Web Advisory Board.

In the meantime…

Until the Web Advisory Board is formed, Toby has plenty to do updating information, correcting problems, and adding some basic functionality and content in preparation for the Fall semester. Problems and requests for assistance should still be made through Claudia Gillentine at the Help Desk (ext. 544 or helpdesk@bakeru.edu).

In Context

My husband Larry and I have a tradition of asking each other “what was your high today?”  If I asked myself that same question about my first month at Baker, I’d have to make a list.   So far, my Baker highs include:

·        The first time I talked about the advantages of a Baker University education to students and their parents at Enrollment.

·        The first time a student came to my office with a petition and I had the opportunity to demonstrate my position on how to address student concerns in a way that upholds our institutional academic integrity.

·        The first time I used my meal card and realized how the meal benefit symbolizes the heart of the community spirit here at Baker.

·        Every time I’ve really needed assistance (e.g., from the help desk, telephone services, facilities, records & registration, LRC, information services, marketing, admissions, university relations, student life, the President’s office, and especially human resources, the business office, Karen Zuzzio, and our campus minister) and I got the help I needed, followed up by “what else do you need?”

·        Every time I’ve looked into the eyes of department chairs and faculty when they described what their programs can do for students.

·        The day I read the feedback to Baker@150.CAS.Progress.011 and could tell that we are on our way from good to great here at CAS.

I wish all of you could have the experience of being new to Baker again. This is truly a wonderful learning community, with a cultural heart we shouldn’t take for granted. Thanks for helping me get off to a good start! - Jamie
