Baker baseball drops season opening series

Baseball Opener

CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Baker University baseball team got the 2011 season kicked off this past weekend against Roger State University and Ottawa University.

The Wildcats (1-3 overall) dropped their opening game of the season to Rogers State (9-1 overall) in five innings 14-4. Brandon Truit, Steven Stewart, Jared Herbert and Andrew Leiker all recorded RBI’s in the contest, but the Rogers State offense was too strong as they went on to record 16 hits and 14 runs in the contest.

The nightcap saw the Wildcats defeat local rival Ottawa University 9-2. Junior standout pitcher Chris Cummins pitched five innings giving up two runs on five hits. Offensively, Jose Orozco and Brandon Truitt led the way each recording two RBI’s.

Sunday’s action didn’t go as planned for the Wildcats as Rogers State went on to defeat Baker in the afternoon doubleheader by scores of 12-1 and 9-1.

“We need to tighten up our pitching a little bit,” said head coach Phil Hannon. “I thought we swung the bats pretty well, being that it was our first time outdoor all season.”

Baker will return to action next Saturday for its home opener against Park University at 1:00 p.m., from Sauder Field.
