Split with St. Mary's

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University baseball team finished its non-conference schedule on Wednesday evening, splitting a doubleheader with the University of St. Mary.

Five Baker players recorded two hits in game one as the Wildcats dropped an extra inning affair, 3-2 in ten innings. Brandon Truitt and Bryan Kindle were the only Wildcats to record RBI’s in the contest.

Five pitchers took the mound in game one, with Zach Durr pitching three innings giving up no hits and no earned runs with three strikeouts. Sean McAlister pitched two scoreless innings, but the game opened up late.

Baker gave up two runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but St. Mary’s scored the go-ahead run in the 10th on a play at the plate where Jose Orozco’s throw from right field was just a few inches off from keeping the game deadlocked.

Fortunes changed for the Wildcats in game two as Baker came from behind for the victory. The Spires scored two runs in the fourth inning, but were held scoreless the rest of the way. The fifth inning the Wildcats received some help as the Spires committed two errors and a walk. Matthew Fry scored on an error, while Brandon Truitt knocked in Jose Orozco and Bryan Kindle on a game-winning single.

Taylor Edging started the game on the mound and Brian Replogle gave up two runs in the fourth inning, but finished the game strong as the Wildcats held on for the victory.

Baker (10-13, 4-7 HAAC) will return to action on Saturday afternoon for a key conference showdown against Avila University (14-13, 5-7 HAAC) at 1:00 p.m. in Kansas City, Mo.
