Wildcats finish opening weekend 1-3 against No. 19 Rogers State

Opening Weekend

CLAREMORE, Okla. – With a 12-game head start and a 12-game winning streak, Baker knew it would have its hands full in the opening weekend against No. 19 Rogers State University (Okla.).

Baker dropped the opening game of the season on Saturday afternoon, 6-2. Joey Orozco and Bryan Kindle were the only Wildcats to record RBI’s in the contest. Senior Chris Cummins threw five innings on the bump while giving up five hits and four earned runs in the loss. View game one box score.

Game two on Saturday saw the Cats‘ jump out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks to an RBI single by Bryan Kindle, scoring Steven Stewart. Rogers State battled back in the fourth inning notching two runs, but Baker managed to tie things up in the sixth on another RBI single from Kindle. Rogers State closed the game out in the bottom of the seventh though as Eric Baker blasted a walk off three-run homer to seal the game. View game two box score.

Extra innings sealed the Wildcats first win on Sunday afternoon as Baker rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth inning. With two outs, Baker rattled of three straight singles to load the bases. Pinch hitter Justin Lane singled to center and scored two runs to give Baker its first victory and ended Rogers State’s 14-game winning streak. Ryan Lasneske picked up his first win of the season as he finished the game pitching 2.2 innings of relief. View game three box score.

The series finale was all Rogers State. Baker opened the game with a 1-0 lead in the first, but it would be the only lead the Wildcats would see. Rogers State tied the game in the bottom half of the inning and went on to tally four runs in the fourth and seven runs in the fifth. Steven Stewart was the lone bright spot offensively, finishing the game 2-for-3 at the plate. Nathan Wheelock was tagged with the loss after throwing 3.2 innings, while giving up two earned runs on six hits. View game four box score.
