TRENTON, N.J. – Former Baker University starting left-handed pitcher Vidal Nuno, has moved up the ranks in minor league baseball and is currently one of the top pitchers for the New York Yankees Double-A Eastern League squad, Trenton Thunder.

The 5-11 lefty from National City, Calif., spent two years pitching for the Wildcats in 2008 and 2009. Highlighted by the 2008 Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) Pitcher of the Year award and was named to the 2008 and 2009 HAAC first-team all-conference teams.

Nuno is 7-3 this season with 2.32 ERA for the Thurder with 60 strikeouts compared to just 16 walks.

“Vidal has continued to develop command of all his pitches and it’s been the key to his success,” said Baker head baseball coach Phil Hannon. “He has worked very hard in all facets of his game and he deserves to be at the level he is at.”

Nuno was drafted out of Baker in the 48th round (No. 1,445 overall) by the Cleveland Indians in the June 2009 First-Year Player Draft and then was picked up by the Yankees in 2011.

His best start of the season came on July 6 against New Britain when he threw six innings with ten strikeouts and gave up just one earned run on three hits.

In 2008, Nuno went 6-4 with a 1.33 ERA for Baker with 70 strikeouts and 17 walks, while in 2009 he was even better going 9-3 with a 2.63 ERA and struck out 81 batters.
