BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University baseball team picked up its first home win of the 2013 season on Sunday afternoon in a 10-4 victory over the University of St. Mary in a nine-inning game at Sauder Field.

Both teams sent five pitchers to the mound, with relief pitcher Justin Bye earning the win for Baker.

Bye threw two scoreless innings and came in relief of starter Ryan Hahn in the fourth inning.

Baker improved to 3-24 on the year and 2-1 against USM in 2013. Its 10 runs scored are the most since they put up 13 on USM back on March 3.

The Wildcats offense scored 10 runs on 10 hits and Josh Ackerman had a huge day with three hits, an RBI and a triple.

Brett Lechien and Ethan Jacks also had multi-hit games with two apiece. With the loss the Spires fell to 11-22.

Baker began its scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning, as Lechien was hit by a pitch and then stole second base. Josh Zach then ripped a single into centerfield that scored Lechien.

USM put two runs on the board off of Hahn in the top of the third, but Baker responded with four runs in the fourth and two in the second.

Josh Vossen pitched for the second straight day for head coach Phil Hannon, as did Kyle Pattrick. Derek Schupp also made a relief appearance and threw 1.1 innings of scoreless ball.

The Wildcats will return home on Tuesday, Apr. 9, as they host Tabor at 2 p.m. in a doubleheader at Sauder Field.
