SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Baker University women's basketball team captured its eight win in nine games on Monday night in a gritty 60-53 win over Evangel University to stay in third-place in the Heart of America Athletic Conference standings.

The Wildcats improved to 19-9 on the year and 12-4 in the HAAC, while Evangel falls to 7-15 and 6-10 in the conference, good for eighth-place.

The Wildcats jumped out to an early 8-0 lead to open up the game with a three by Rece Huddlin, two free throws by Rashida Simpson and a three-point basket by BriAnna Garza to force an Evangel timeout.

The Wildcats kept on the pressure and extended its lead to 12 points, 16-4, with a three-pointer from Kyrstie Ehm.

Evangel fought its way back and cut the lead to seven at the half, 32-25 with a basket by Sierra McSpadden.

The Wildcats led by double digits for a majority of the second half until, the Crusaders went on a run and cut the BU lead to just four, 47-43. Both teams traded baskets and Evangel eventually trailed by just two with 2:46 to go, 55-53.

Alisha Fanshier hit four free throws and gave the Wildcats a little more cushion at 59-53. Baker's defense shut down Evangel and they escaped with a 60-53 win.

Baker will go for its 20th win of the season as they host No. 13 ranked Benedictine College this Thursday, Feb. 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the Collins Center.

Simpson led Baker in scoring and rebounding with 15 points and 14 boards for a double-double and Shea Shoemaker joined her in double figures in scoring with 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
