Former Avila head coach Bruce Young returns to BakerBruce Young

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University football staff is pleased to announce the addition of former Baker assistant coach and Avila head coach Bruce Young to the coaching staff.

Young returns to Baker after serving as head coach at Avila University for the past five years. During his tenure at Avila, Young graduated 50 of 52 seniors, raised the team grade-point average from 2.2 to 2.8 and coached 10 academic All-Americans.

A member of the Missouri High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame, Young enjoyed success at Norborne, Marceline and Ray-Pec high schools. Young was an assistant coach at Baker University for five seasons before taking over Avila’s program.

“I’m very comfortable here at Baker,” said Young, entering his 41st season coaching football. “ I already told some of the guys that I’m an old-school coach. I take pride in mentoring the players and younger coaches.”

A graduate of Northwest Missouri State University, coach Young and his wife, Dwyla, have three daughters, Julie, Lindy and Kara.

“We are very lucky to have Bruce Young back at Baker University,” stated Baker head coach Mike Grossner. “He will be a positive influence with the young men and coaches on our team. He has such a vast wealth of experience and knowledge and we will all benefit. His recruiting relationships in Missouri, Iowa and Florida will be huge in our efforts to attract the top student-athletes. He absolutely understands the HAAC conference and what needs to be done.”
