Wildcats welcome Peru State into HAAC on Saturday

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – After knocking off No. 10 Ottawa University in the season opener, the Baker University football team will turn its attention to conference play this weekend as it hosts new Heart of America Athletic Conference foe Peru (Neb.) State College.

The Wildcats racked up 488 yards of total offense while only allowing 257 yards against Ottawa. Baker shut out the Braves 24-0 in the second half after leading 17-16 at halftime. It was the Wildcats’ first nonconference win in 10 years.

Scott Meyer led the Wildcats’ offense with 21 carries for 150 yards and two touchdowns. His longest run came in the fourth quarter when he broke free for a 54-yard gain deep into Ottawa territory, setting up a six-yard touchdown run for John Babb. Babb finished with 102 yards and one touchdown.

Special teams kept the Wildcats in the game in the first half. Shane Gimzo put the Braves on the scoreboard first, but junior Tyler Hatcher quickly answered on the ensuing kickoff, finding a gap for an 82-yard return to even the score at 7-7. Junior Reggie Harris kept the momentum rolling for the Wildcats on their next drive with a 62-yard punt return to give Baker a 14-7 advantage.Grossner Pumped

“Our special teams was huge for us heading into halftime,” said head coach Mike Grossner. “We came out of the half fired up and ready to play. I think it showed.”

Sophomore quarterback Jake Morse finished with 127 yards on 11-for-27 passing with one interception.

Peru State, 4-7 in 2010, is coming off a season-ending victory over Haskell Indian Nations University. The last three seasons, Peru State was a member of the Central States Football League (CSFL), which was comprised of schools primarily in Oklahoma and Texas.
