No. 25 Baker looks to keep playoff hopes alive Saturday against No. 9 Benedictine

2011 Senior Day

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – For the first time since Sept. 19, the Baker football team is back in the NAIA coaches’ Top 25 poll with a chance to knock off another Top 10 rival on its home field.

The No. 25-ranked Wildcats (5-3) will play host to No. 9 Benedictine (8-1) on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Liston Stadium. In the season opener, the Wildcats defeated No. 10 Ottawa 41-16.

“I think if we can take care of business this weekend and head into the final weekend with a three-game winning streak, the raters will have to take a look at us,” Wildcat head coach Mike Grossner said. “The bottom line is we need to do our job on Saturday. The team, especially the seniors, will be ready to go.”

The Wildcats have a five-game winning streak over the Ravens. Benedictine hasn’t beaten Baker since the 2005 season opener.

“You don’t see streaks like this to often in our league anymore,” Grossner added. “Our staff is proud to have this one under our belt and we’d like to try to add to that on Saturday.”Calvin Pearce

Baker quarterback Jake Morse (231.5 total offensive yards per game) and Benedictine quarterback Bill Noonan (177.2 offensive yards per game) currently rank first and second in the HAAC, respectively. Senior running back John Babb also leads the HAAC with 81.6 rushing yards per game.

Defensively, Benedictine has been solid all season with Top 10 rankings in scoring defense (12 points per game), total defense per game (242.3 yards), pass defense efficiency (90.3 yards per game) and sacks against (0.8 per game).

Baker juniors Ryder Werts (60 total tackles) and Adam Steele (44) continue to pace the Wildcat defense. Senior Madison Morris and freshman Steven Sanders each have three interceptions on the season while freshman Andre Jolly ranks fourth in the NAIA with 0.4 forced fumbles per game and 11th in the NAIA with 0.8 sacks per game.
