BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University football team will return to Liston Stadium for its 2012 home opener this Saturday at 6 p.m., as they take on HAAC rival Evangel University.

Baker returns to the friendly confines of Baldwin City after a 2-0 start to the season with two road wins at No. 11 Ottawa, 27-20, on Aug. 25 and a 34-13 win at Peru State last Saturday.

The Wildcats featured the HAAC Defensive Player of the Week against Peru State, as Adam Steele picked up the honor with 14 tackles and two for loss.

Baker totaled 396 yards of offense against the Bobcats with a balanced attack of 209 on the ground and 187 through the air.

Sam Vossen has stepped in nicely at quarterback for injured starter Jake Morse, completing 21-of-34 passes for 316 yards and three touchdowns.

Reggie Harris leads the team in receptions with five and yards with 117. He caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from Vossen last week.

Baker ranks eighth in the country in total rushing yards with 386 and is led by junior standout Dillon Baxter with his 163 yards on the ground and one touchdown. He ran for 79 yards on just 11 carries last week.

The backfield has been a tandem of Baxter and freshman Jermaine Broomfield the first two week’s of the season. Broomfield broke out on the scene last week with a 20 rush 96 yard performance and two touchdowns against Peru State. He has 121 yards rushing this season.

Week one HAAC Defensive Player of the Week Emmerson Clarke has helped lead a strong linebacker core that also features Steele and senior Ryder Werts.

Clarke had two interceptions and two defensive touchdowns against Ottawa and has 11 total tackles.

Safety Preston Schenck is tied for the team lead in tackles with Steele with 16 and Schenck picked off a pass against OU.

On the defensive line, Andre Jolly has paved the way for the Baker defense with 11 tackles and two sacks and leads the team in tackles for loss with four.

Evangel enters the game, 1-0, on the season with a victory over Friends University last weekend, 27-14, at home.

Baker will look to avenge a tough 34-27 loss at Evangel a year ago. Baker is 13-11 all-time vs. the Crusaders.
