No. 15 BU Wins Wild One at USM, 41-40

ULEAVENWORTH, Kan. – For the second straight game, the No. 15 ranked Baker University football team squeezed out a one point victory, as the Wildcats went on the road and beat the University of St. Mary, 41-40, on Saturday afternoon to improve to 2-0 on the year.

Baker defeated No. 18 ranked Ottawa University last Saturday, 25-24, in the County Line Clash at Liston Stadium.

But this Saturday, Baker had to stop a two-point conversion on the final play of the game by USM to escape with the win.

With one second to go on the clock, Baker led 41-34, and USM starting quarterback Josh Ervin threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Ronnie Cooper to bring the score to 41-40, instead of kicking the extra point and sending the game to overtime, USM decided to go for two and was stopped by the Baker defense.

Baker improved to 2-0, while USM falls to 1-1. Baker will next take on rival Benedictine College on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 1 p.m. in Atchison, Kan.

The USM offense put up 500 yards of offense on Saturday and scored first in the first quarter on a Alex Gomes-Coelho reception.

Then BU cornerback Duane Sims picked off Ervin and took the pick 29 yards for a pick six to tie it up 7-7.

Clarence Clark then put Baker up, 10-7 with a 21-yard field goal, which proved to be his first of two fields goals on the day, he later would connect on a 55-yarder.

USM then scored 21 unanswered and went up 28-18. Alex Stebbins then scored next for Baker with a one-yard rumble to the end zone and Baker decided to go for two with a run by Camren Torneden and he connected on that, to make it 28-18.

After Clark's 55-yard field goal, USM went up 34-21 on a Jerrell Young one-yard reception.

Camren Torneden then scored the Wildcats first special teams touchdown of the season on a 51-yard punt return touchdown to bring the score to 34-28 USM.

Clarence Clark then connected with quarterback Jake Morse for an 11-yard touchdown to tie things up at 34-34, Clark would then miss the extra-point.

With 3:48 to go in the game, Torneden would finally give the lead back to Baker with a nine yard run and Baker led, 41-34. Then USM would score and miss the two-point conversion and Baker would escape with the one-point win.
