Baker men grab marquee HAAC victory over No. 21 MidAmerica Nazarene

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – For the second consecutive season, the Baker University men’s basketball team knocked off No. 21 MidAmerica Nazarene on its home floor as the Wildcats out toughed the Pioneers 71-67 on Thursday evening.

Ben Steinlage, coming off a career-high against Culver-Stockon last weekend, didn’t disappoint, scoring a game-high 18 points while shooting 7-for-11 from the floor. He also pulled down 10 rebounds to record back-to-back double-doubles.

“Ben was terrific again,” said Baker head coach Brett Ballard. “I thought our guys played tough tonight and it was a good home win for us.”

Senior Joe Wachter was the only other Wildcat in double figures as he finished with 12 points while shooting 5-for-8 from the field and 2-for-3 from beyond the arc.Coach Ballard postgame

“Joe was huge for us in the first half, he got us off to a good start and made some shots,” Ballard added. “Tonight was a team deal though, we’ll celebrate this one today, but we’ve got to get ready for Graceland coming in on Saturday.”

Baker (18-8, 11-4 HAAC) took a 10 point lead into halftime and extended the gap to 16 points early in the second half before MNU made a comeback. The Pioneers methodically whittled the lead down to three points with 41 seconds to play in regulation, but Corey Anderson sealed the game at the free throw line sinking two foul shots to put Baker ahead 69-64.

MidAmerica Nazarene (19-8, 13-2 HAAC) currently owns just a one game lead in the HAAC over Evangel University. The Wildcats own third place alone ahead of Benedictine College.

Baker returns to action on Feb. 18 against Graceland University (16-10, 8-7 HAAC) at 4 p.m., in Baldwin City, Kan.
