Late Benedictine comeback sinks Baker, 68-62 in overtime

OT Killer

ATCHISON, Kan. – After shooting just 3-for-19 from beyond the arc in the first 38 minutes on Thursday evening, Benedictine’s Quaran Johnson sunk the biggest 3-pointer of the game with 5.2 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime.

Baker (18-10, 11-6 HAAC) led 51-43 with 1:47 to play in regulation, but Benedictine (15-13, 10-7 HAAC) managed to string together seven-straight points in the final 1:30 and followed that up with 17-11 advantage in overtime.

“You know we didn’t have all the calls go our way at the end there,” said Baker head coach Brett Ballard. “You can’t put any blame on the officials, you’ve got to give Benedictine credit for the way their guys battled back, but I’m also proud of our guys. We can walk out of here with our heads high knowing we had those guys beat. I told our guys to treat it like it’s Friday morning when they walk out of the locker room tonight.” Click here to listen to coach Ballard’s postgame .

The game itself was a defensive showdown as Baker finished just 18-for-66 (27 percent) from the floor and 8-for-31 (25 percent) from beyond the arc. Benedictine didn’t fare much better as the Ravens finished 15-for-52 (29 percent) from the floor and 5-for-22 (22 percent) from beyond the arc.

Freshman Brandon Moore (Jefferson City, Mo.) scored a career-high 16 points to finish as the Wildcats leading scorer. Ben Steinlage was the only other Wildcat in double figures with 12 points.

Charlie Wallrapp led the Benedictine scoring attack with 16 points and Elgin Caldwell and Quaran Johnson rounded out the Ravens top three scorers with 12 and 10 points respectively.

Baker returns to action on Feb. 25 against Central Methodist University at 4 p.m., in Baldwin City for Senior Day.
