High-powered OLLU knocks off Baker, 103-88

Jordan Honore

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Baker opened the game with a 21-6 run over the first 13 minutes, but it wasn’t enough to stop a huge comeback by Our Lady of the Lake over the final seven minutes of the first half as the Saints finished on a 37-21 run to take a 44-42 lead into the locker room.

“We got off to a great start and handled their pressure well early,” said Baker head coach Brett Ballard. “We had about a six to seven minute stretch there where we didn’t execute and allowed them to get back into the game.”

Jordan Honore led all Baker scorers with a team-high 17 points. Ben Steinlage (16 points), Samer Jasser (12 points), and Todd Johnston (10 points) rounded out the Baker offensive attack.

“OLLU’s goal is to get you to lose your poise with the pressure they put on you,” Ballard added. “Mentally we never put our heads down. That’s how we’ve been all year long and that’s why we’ve success.”

Our Lady of the Lake (27-7) was led by Robert Martinez as he scored a game-high 36 points while shooting 12-for-22 from the field. The Saints finished the contest 30-for-75 (40 percent) from the field and closed out the game going 18-for-19 at the foul line.

“Those guys are just relentless,” Ballard said. “We didn’t make enough stops defensively and we weren’t ever able to get over the hump.”

Baker (21-12) finished the contest 33-for-61 (54 percent) from the field and 3-for-11 (27 percent) from beyond the arc. Baker was outscored 26-6 on points off turnovers and only shot 19-for-34 from the charity stripe.
