BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University men's basketball team pulled out a close victory to ring in the New Year with a 65-61 win over the Peru State Bobcats.

The Wildcats are now 9-5 overall and 2-2 in HAAC play, while Peru State is now 6-8 overall and 0-4 in the HAAC.

The Wildcats came out strong with a 10-1 lead over the Bobcats within the first five minutes of play in the first half.

Peru State suffered a rough start by not scoring a basket until the 14:30 mark in the first half and trailed the entire half.

The biggest lead of the half by Baker was 12 points, with 3:14 to play with a basket by Kevin Lysaught to give Baker the 29-17 lead.

Baker took an eight-point lead into halftime, leading the Bobcats 31-23. But the WIldcats struggled at the beginning of the second half, allowing the lead to change four times and trailed the Bobcats for most of the second half.

The Bobcats largest lead of the second half was a 13-point advantage over Baker with 10:25 to play, 52-39.

Baker clawed its way back the rest of the way and Todd Johnston finally gave the Wildcats the lead, 59-58, with 2:55 to play in the half. Kody Kirkpatrick then nailed a three for Peru State to put them up 61-59, but Jordan Honore knocked in a bucket to tie the game up at 61-61.

Ben Steinlage knocked in a layup and Todd Eils nailed two free throws the rest of the way to give Baker the 65-61 win.

The Wildcats will be in action next at Culver Stockton on Jan. 5 at 4 p.m. in Canton, Mo.
